It was the norm then, perhaps it was, that's the best argument I've heard for them remaining and frankly it's not good enough.

The real reason they take pride of place in our towns and cities is to remind us who has the money and the power, historically they had and they still do.

I agree Kizzy.

Although I'd qualify it with a not a general getting rid of this statue or that statue.

However, Councils and Mayors where elected do need to not only look but act on those offended by these monuments
Especially to individuals who actively undertook and even arranged persecution or demoralising of others and races.

There are several statues I personally for different reasons find an affront to my personal thinking.
I know I can't get them removed.

That statue in Bristol, there have been calls for that to be removed for a good while.
Some of the names in streets there are in my view offensive too.

It is really good and overdue to now rightly look at just what is offensive to people and races in our cities.
I'd hope a lot of moves are heading into being now.

Your comment, of the reasoning of them being there as being given as, how they were and acted as being the norm.
Is, as you say just not good enough.
Since how some of them acted should NEVER have been 'A" or the norm anyway.

i think if you asked the majority of the UK, they would have no idea the statues were even there. It's just not something that generally gets any ones attention. Yes, there are a few high profile ones such as Nelsons column, but who knows all the statues in the UK and what their "claim to fame" is, I certainly don't

The fact the yoof are focussed on statues is they have nothing velse as they live in a modern tolerant country. It's testiment that they have to go back a centutlry to get angry.

:)

why were these statues made for Slavery in the first place

:suspect:

not something you need to be proud of or honour with a statue, to be honest

They weren't made for slavery, they were made for the philanthropic works.

So the moral of this tale is as long as you remain ignorant to the reason why a statue commemorates a person it's ok?

It's not just young people, you are sounding like a jaded old man here LT.

Look at the statue to Thatcher for instance imo that should come down, her terms decimated this country she was the one who chose to exploit other countries for coal than produce our own even though there are copious amounts.

Her views on homosexuality and her brutal response to race riots in the 80s.

Nothing about her was worth celebrating.

I don't really know much about coal mining, is there any reason the UK can't start again?

(I think we should be using more renewables instead, but still)

there was an article yesterday celebrating that during covid we were able to switch off the coal power plants and have never been so environmentally friendly in power generation

That's great! If the country could be set up to maintain this, it'd do the environment a world of good.

Is there any need to have physical offices, when someone can have home internet? It'd (probably?) be cheaper for businesses to just pay broadband expenses for employees than the rent out and power office space.

Yes, because the statue is what started the protests and not yet another murder that occurred a matter of weeks ago.

When you have no argument... grasp at straws, eh?

Nope they were filled in or flooded, we have moved on environmentally now so that industry would have come to a natural end anyway. The people and areas affected would then have had time to diversify into other sectors, rather than just find themselves and their families with no work and no future.

This is what should be taught in schools, it's important modern history.

This happened in April and I've been following this since. I bet something was only done because of the world watching. I believe LAPD tried to sweep this under the carpet. I think they initially said the man started punching.

I love when videos expose bad cops!
