Scotland international Graham Alexander has signed a new one-year contract with Premier League newcomers Burnley.

The 37-year-old enjoyed a memorable campaign as the Clarets reached the top flight for the first time since 1976, starting all 61 league and cup games.

Although he spent much of his career as a defender, he starred as a holding midfielder in their play-off success.

Alexander joined from neighbours Preston in 2007, when they turned down his request for a two-year deal.

However, he has now committed his future to Turf Moor until the summer of 2010.

Former Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva says he has urged his Brazil team-mate Felipe Melo to join the Gunners this summer.

The Gunners are reported to have made a substantial offer for Fiorentina's 25-year-old holding midfielder.

"We heard rumours and he asked me. I said it's a fantastic club and if he's interested he should go without thinking," Silva told BBC Sport.

"He is exactly what they need - a powerful player with quality."

Gilberto, who left the Gunners for Panathinaikos in Greece last summer, added: "If they got him it would be great because he is a player they need at the moment.

"I'm sure if they got him it would be a good signing. I have told him Arsenal is a great club and I am sure next season they will improve."

The 32-year-old Silva, who spent six seasons with the Gunners, played alongside Melo in Brazil's Confederations Cup final win over the US and said he had been impressed with his side-kick throughout the tournament.

"He is a very good player," said Silva after his side's 3-2 win at Ellis Park on Sunday.

Xabi Alonso has refused to rule out a move to Real Madrid this summer and has explained that he has not closed the door on any possibilities amidst reports that he could leave Liverpool.

The Basque Country midfielder has been linked with a switch to the Bernabeu this summer, but the rumours have subsided after manager Rafa Benitez stated he wanted the player to stay.

But Alonso was asked about his thoughts on moving back to la Primera with Madrid by Don Balon and he revealed that any number of things could still happen.

"In respect to all this I have not closed any door and we will just have to wait and see what happens," he told the weekly football magazine.

"It is always positive when various teams are said to want you because that is better than nobody being interested, but I cannot say much more.

"I know that I have to keep playing well and will be able to decide what happens next whenever it arises.

"I do not think a move to Real Madrid is impossible, but I would also have no regrets at all staying at Liverpool."

I'd love to keep him, but I'm starting to accept that he will leave after reading that. Should be a good 25-35 million anyway, just hope if he goes we can keep Mascherano and sign another quality center mid, because Lucas is the only other we have, unless Rafa wants to drop Gerrard back into the center and bring another striker in to partner Torres.

Wenger eyes Serie A swoop

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is ready to make a move for Udinese midfielder Gaetano D'Agostino, according to reports.

Wenger is keen to bolster his midfield this summer and is now being linked with a swoop for D'Agostino after his move to Juventus fell through last week.

Udinese owner Giampaolo Pozzo has confirmed that an English club have made an offer for him and reports in Italy claim that it has been made by the Gunners, although Chelsea have also been mentioned as a possible.

"We have one offer from England and another one from an important Italian club," Pozzo revealed. "Anything can happen."

Felipe Melo remains a target for Wenger but it looks as though the Brazilian star will be staying with Fiorentina and the Gunners boss is turning his attention elsewhere.

Not sure who id prefer probably melo.

Hes 2 years old then melo to mm 27 is kinda old for Arsenal lol.
