Netherlands: more and more heavy rain on the way, after flooding hits homes in limburg

Southern Limburg is bracing itself for a second day of heavy rain after some roads and towns were hit by flooding on Tuesday.

The regional safety board warned that the Maas and tributaries were at risk of overflowing following the downpours both in the province and upriver in the Ardennes in the last 24 hours.

The region remains on orange alert until Thursday evening as some areas could see up to 150 mm of rainfall in the next 36 hours – almost double the monthly average for July, online weather bureau Weerplaza warned.

Drivers were urged to avoid non-essential journeys because of the risk of loose drain covers and flooded roads, while owners of recreational boats were warned of dangerous currents on the Maas river.

The A79 motorway through Heerlen remains closed after parts of the road filled with water on Wednesday.

Holidaymakers have been advised to move away from rivers and streams connected to the Maas because of the risk that they could burst their banks.

Residents and guests at the Oliemeulen mill, now a bed and breakfast, on the Camerbeuk stream, had to be rescued by firefighters as flood waters filled the building up to waist height.

‘The stream is intact, but a complete river has sprung up beside it,’ one neighbour told 1Limburg. ‘The mill was 1.5 metres underwater. The elderly couple living there had to be brought out swimming by firefighters.’

Homes were also flooded in the village of Schin op Geul, where 85 mm of rain fell in a three-hour spell. Meteo Limburg said none of its forecasting computers predicted the volume of rain on Wednesday.

Limburg begins to clean up after flash floods, but more rain is on the way

The KNMI weather bureau has withdrawn its code red weather warning for parts of Limburg because of exceptionally heavy downpours but warns that more rain is on the way.

The rain has brought widespread flooding to parts of Limburg, Germany and Belgium and at least four people are now known to have died after six homes collapsed in the German town of Schuld (Rijnland-Palts). Dozens more are missing.

In Valkenburg, near Maastricht, 433 homes are without electricity because of the floods and the occupants of a hospice and a nursing home had to be evacuated overnight because of the flood risk.

Holidaymakers staying on a nearby campsite were also taken to safety.

The army was drafted in to help with the rescue and flood prevention efforts after more than 10 centimetres of rain fell in a short space of time.

People are also being urged to stay in their homes until the water has gone down because of the currents. ‘You can be dragged away,’ Maarten de Kever from the local safety board told NPO news.

In Maastricht itself the water level in the Maas river is high but has not given rise to any problems, De Kever said. Weather forecasters expect the river level to rise for a further two days.

A code yellow weather warning for more heavy rain is now in place for all of the country apart from the three western provinces.

PM Mark Rutte also commented on these awful flash floods

Quote:

South Limburg suffers from enormous flooding. I have just spoken to the governor and expressed our support on behalf of the Cabinet and the House of Representatives.
@SvVeldhoven ''Stientje van Veldhoven''
will travel to the region tomorrow morning to take a look at the spot. I wish everyone the best of luck.

BBC also a report on the floods in Germany

now at least 33 dead

Quote:

At least 33 people have died and many more are missing following severe floods in western Germany, police say.

The worst of the flooding has been in the states of Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia, where buildings and cars have been washed away.

At least four people have died in neighbouring Belgium, while the Netherlands has also been badly hit.

It follows record rainfall in parts of western Europe that has caused major rivers to burst their banks.

Malu Dreyer, chief of the Rhineland-Palatinate state, described the flooding as a "catastrophe".

"There are dead, missing and many people still in danger," she said. "All of our emergency services are in action round the clock and risking their own lives."

Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is in the US ahead of a meeting with President Joe Biden, said she was "shocked by the disaster".

At least 19 people died in the Ahrweiler district of Rhineland-Palatinate, after the Ahr river, which flows into the Rhine, burst its banks.

Police helicopters and hundreds of soldiers have been deployed to some areas to help stranded residents. Earlier, police said dozens of people were waiting on rooftops to be rescued.

Schools have been closed around the west of the country, while transport links have been severely disrupted.

About 25 houses are in danger of collapsing in the district of Schuld bei Adenau in the mountainous Eifel region, where a state of emergency has been declared, according to German broadcaster SWR.

It said some houses had been completely cut-off and could no longer be reached by boat.

Eight deaths were reported in the district of Euskirchen in North Rhine-Westphalia, while four people died in the Eifel region when their homes were swept away.

Meanwhile, two firefighters died on Wednesday in North Rhine-Westphalia. One drowned, while the other reportedly collapsed following a rescue operation.

Neighbouring Belgium has also been hit by flash floods, and dramatic video showed cars being swept away along a street in the city of Verviers.
