Rene reveals surprise

Quote:

First-team coach Rene Meulensteen has revealed he only discovered news of Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement on Wednesday morning at Carrington.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...n=0,34,986,400

The Dutchman, who believes the boss must be feeling some relief at making the decision, obviously refused to be drawn on any successor - jokingly nominating Fred the Red as his choice!

Meulensteen was asked by Sky Sports News when he found out about the big story and replied: "Just this morning when I came to the club. He called us into his office and said what decision he has taken.

"It's always been on the cards - there has been speculation every season but the manager kept his cards close to his chest. He felt the time is right now and he's made that decision.

"He's obviously a man that thinks very, very hard and I'm sure he's taken a lot of thought in making this decision. I wish him all the best - he's been fantastic for the club, for Manchester United, and I'm hoping the fans give whoever comes in the same support as he gets."

The manager, predictably, ends on a high after guiding the team to a 13th Barclays Premier League title, the 20th overall, with the celebrations set to go into overdrive at Old Trafford on Sunday when the trophy will be lifted.

"I think we've responded really well to the big disappointment we had last year," added Meulensteen. "There was a determination around the whole place, especially from the manager, and he's delighted we won the title in the way we did."

Aww:(. I hope that Rene sticks around for the new era, his work goes un-noticed.

Steve Bruce says 'humble' Sir Alex Ferguson will be tough to follow

Quote:

Steve Bruce paid tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson's "humility" after the Manchester United manager announced his retirement.

The Hull City boss played at Old Trafford for nine years between 1987 and 1996, winning three Premier League titles and three FA Cups under Ferguson before embarking on a managerial career of his own.

He says his former boss is always willing to offer encouragement - as he did ahead of Hull's promotion clash against Cardiff last weekend - and says his drive to succeed has had an impact on everybody who has worked with him.

Bruce told Sky Sports News: "Whoever has gone to play for him, this winning mentality that he's got rubs off on you. People ask over the years what he's like and he's so driven and so determined and he works so hard at the job.

"When you finish and you hang up your boots it's no surprise that a few of us have gone into coaching. He sets such high standards that he's very difficult to follow. It's impossible to copy somebody like him.

"He wants to beat you for certain and he does that constantly with us, but he offers you a bit of encouragement. He's always there if you pick up the telephone and he'll always come back to you.

"He's got a humility about him from his working class background where he'll treat the groundsman just as well as he'll treat his star centre-forward. He's got a fantastic humility about him for all he's achieved.

"I spoke to him a couple of days ago and there was no hint of anything about retirement. There was a simple text message and a short conversation wishing me good luck for the weekend and afterwards a text to say well done.

"He'll do that not just with his players who've gone into management, but he'll do that for most managers, especially the young ones.

"He'll always give you the encouragement that every young manager needs."

Act

David Moyes has been installed as the favourite to take over at Old Trafford and Bruce says the Everton boss is a worthy candidate.

But he says Ferguson's shoes will be almost impossible to fill after producing a list of accolades that includes 13 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues.

"Whether it's Jose Mourinho or David Moyes or whoever, I know one thing, it's going to be some act to follow," Bruce added.

"When you look over 27 years at the trophies he has won it doesn't seem quite right that Fergie won't be in charge of Man United any more.

"He has gone on and on and on and 27 years is quite remarkable - and I can assure you I don't think the next manager will do 27 years.

"It's quite incredible that Sir Alex has been in charge all that time and it's an unbelievable achievement. To have 1500 games in charge of Manchester United is, in itself, a record I don't think will ever be broken.

"It'll be not quite the same and it'll be difficult for whoever goes in because he's such a big act to follow."

They've been in the champions league. Didn't get past the qualifying round, but still played in the competition.

bbfan1991 08-05-2013 12:39 PM

Europa League in the 2010/2011 season.

bbfan1991 08-05-2013 12:52 PM

Most journalists reckon that David Moyes to United is a done deal. SSN have just filmed him leaving Everton's training ground, but he is off to Chelsea to watch their game vs Chelsea to spy on what could be his last opponents as Everton manager...

Jesus. 08-05-2013 12:53 PM

Looks like it is Moyes.

I think you've just appointed your version of Graeme Souness.

my twitters just filled on "Moyes to be confirmed as new manager within days" so much for the European experience, personally think Moyes will be way out of his depth

bbfan1991 08-05-2013 01:02 PM

David Moyes is not who I wanted, but I will 100% back him when it is confirmed because there is no point in slagging him off before he has even started.

He can offer stability, but a club like United obviously wants success and yeah there are concerns about the European experience which he lacks, but if it is SAF and Sir Bobby's choice then I am kind of content with that.

Have to say, it's a ****ing disgrace if Moyes is our new boss and Jose and Klopp haven't even been sounded out.

Ive cried over 4 times in my life.

Ryan57 08-05-2013 08:55 PM
