Thomas Vermaelen has been named the EA SPORTS Player of the Month for August.

The Belgian defender scooped the official Club prize after a string of powerful performances at the heart of the Arsenal back four.

Thomas made a dream debut at Goodison Park, heading home Robin van Persie's free-kick to give Arsenal a two-goal lead. They went on to win 6-1 as the new boy adapted quickly to English football.

The summer signing from Ajax was just as impressive at Celtic in the Champions League, making a number of timely blocks and interceptions while developing a strong partnership with William Gallas.

Thomas' standards remained high in his three other August games against Portsmouth, Celtic and Manchester United and he has been recognised by the Arsenal fans with 34.9 per cent of the votes cast.

Gallas, who scored three goals last month, finished second in our poll with 22.5 per cent. Andrey Arshavin was third.

And Arshavin is injured and Wenger is pisssedddd!

andyman 10-09-2009 02:40 PM

Woohoo! We're in the World Cup!
2010 should be a great summer, World Cup, BB11, great weather, women, beer, bbq's... Pukka!

The big supermarkets will be happy with last nights score, beer sales next summer will be huge, plus it will be 4 years next summer since any real England summer action!

Dolphin-and-Whale 10-09-2009 02:50 PM

Nilmar is quality. He'll do well at Villareal. Nathan, Senna played last night for Spain but Iniesta was injured. Fabregas scored though.

Former England striker Teddy Sheringham has come out of retirement to play for Kent League side Beckenham Town in their FA Vase campaign.

The 43-year-old, whose previous clubs include Millwall, Tottenham and Manchester United, ended his career after a spell at Colchester last year.

He will make his comeback against Combined Counties League side Banstead Athletic on Saturday, 19 September.

Sheringham and his son Charlie played in a recent fund raising game.

Sheringham, who also played for Aldershot, Nottingham Forest, Portsmouth and West Ham, made 908 club appearances, scoring 350 goals and netted 11 times in 51 England appearances.

King Gizzard 10-09-2009 07:37 PM

Irish football would go down the shitter if they impose that ban...irish footballers are taken from irish clubs all the time at a young age..if there was a ban theyd just stay at there irish teams and not get the top class education they would need which would be availible at big clubs

basically the same with african players

30stone 10-09-2009 07:39 PM

Yeah african players come to england because they have talent and they want good money..

They wouldnt get that in their own..

King Gizzard 10-09-2009 07:41 PM

it should be down to the player really, they should be allowed to move, afterall, its there future, would you rather be at lens where the training and education is not even half of what you would get at chelsea?
