On the old games I liked to have one of the Nidorans, you could fully evolve them by the end of the first cave.

I like the grass one in silver and torchic in Ruby. In Red my favourite starter was Squirtle and in Diamond it's Chimchar.

Mine in Blue was Charmander

Charizard was cool but i couldn't deal with Charmander and Charmeleon. Anyone remember Magmar? He was cool but not in the literal sense.

I thought Electabuzz was okay, I always liked Magmar better though personally.
