US cyber-attack: Russia 'clearly' behind SolarWinds operation, says Pompeo
Published 17 hours ago

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has blamed Russia for what is being described as the worst-ever cyber espionage attack on the US government.

"We can say pretty clearly that it was the Russians that engaged in this activity," Mr Pompeo said on Friday.

President Trump downplayed the attack's severity - saying it was "under control" - and cast doubt on Russia's role, hinting at Chinese involvement.

The hack, targeting software made by US firm SolarWinds, was found last week.

However, it had been going on for months. Russia has denied any involvement in the attack.

Among the US agencies targeted was the office that manages nuclear weapons.

That government organisation, the US energy department, said however that the arsenal's security had not been compromised.

Several other organisations around the world, including in the UK, are understood to have been targeted by hackers using the same network management software.

Researchers, who have named the hack Sunburst, say it could take years to fully comprehend what is one of the biggest ever cyber-attacks.....

It should worry Americans that Trump continually defends Russia, even when his own administration says that they are responsible. Why does he do it? Is he being blackmailed?

There's a difference between being disappointed about the result, to then accusing the result of being fixed because you don't personally agree with it.

The only factual controversy that I would have with Trump's victory over Hilary is the fact that more people actually voted for Hilary in terms of the popular vote.

Where as in this case Trump doesn't have a leg to stand on as his been slaughtered by Biden in both the popular vote and the Electoral College vote.

My comments are not about their opinions, they're about the way those opinions are being expressed. Like foot-stomping toddlers.

I thought Trump's win in 2016 was a disaster, I said as much but I challenge you to go back and find one post where I'm furrowing my brow and wetting my pants about it like these Republican commentators. Go on. Shoo.

This guy is Fox News. The most watched cable news network in America. Why does James of Tibb know better?

Most American media is partisan and Fox News is a well known Republican news source? This stuff is not conspiracy theory it's just how their media operates. Fox is Republican-slanted .

bots 20-12-2020 11:44 AM

fox news is designated an entertainment channel, not a news channel. That should tell everyone all they need to know

That's like saying Sky or The BBC or ITV are entertainment channels not news channels, so that tells you all you need to know.

Does that mean if Fox is Republican slanted, and Fox dominates in the viewership ratings, that Republicans are the majority and there's no way that Biden could have received the most votes in history?

No it means that Republicans are more inclined to use TV as their primary news source (rather than news publications or online news sources). This is down to a combination of lower educations levels (more likely to watch or listen to news than read it) and Republicans having a generally older voter base (more likely to still be using broadcast television over on-demand sources).that's not intended as offensive stereotyping by the way - these are known statistics.

Tl;Dr - "all it means is that Republicans watch more telly"

They might not watch more telly, maybe they just prefer current affairs instead of Simon Cowell or a Netflix series (take your pick of many)?

It's the way news coverage is going in the social-media age unfortunately.

It's less and less about presenting the facts of the news - or both sides of a story - and then letting the viewers make up their minds; and more about presenting an agenda that they know there is a group of viewers that want that. It's aimed at a minority of the public but that is enough to keep the channel in business.

You could say the same about many of the newspapers in this country.

The media as we knew it is not needed anymore. The people have their own voices now on social media. We're living in the Information wars.

Alf 20-12-2020 12:35 PM

What lengths would the established media go to to keep the status quo?

Would they possibly try to steal an election?

You mean by not being happy about it but accepting the democratic process? Yeah, the Trump cult should try that.
