West Ham step up chase for Bates

West Ham will step up their pursuit of Middlesbrough defender Matthew Bates after club captain Lucas Neill rejected a new contract at Upton Park. Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola is looking to fill the right-back spot next season and sees 22-year-old Bates as the perfect candidate to replace Neill. The Boro Academy graduate is out of contract at the end of the month and is desperate to secure a return to the Premier League.

Zola is also looking to keep the wage bill down at Upton Park and Bates would earn considerably less than the departed Neill, who was one of the highest earners at the club.

Kop meltdown: Transfer shock for manager Rafa Benitez as Liverpool cash crisis deepens

Liverpool were facing meltdown last night after their dire financial crisis was exposed.

Only 48 hours after losing out to Manchester City on the signing of Gareth Barry, and with Glen Johnson - another long-term target - expected to join Chelsea, details of their fragile state became clear.

Owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett were warned that there is 'significant doubt on the group's and parent company's ability to continue as a going concern' because of the club's debts.

Though Liverpool's most recent accounts showed a profit of £10.2million, their parent company lost £42.6m, mainly due to interest payments of £36.5m.

That will panic the club's supporters, who are seeing their rivals move quickly in the transfer market - and may even unsettle their star players, just as the club seemed to be gearing up to challenge champions Manchester United.

Hicks and Gillett face a July 24 deadline to refinance their £350m debt and though they remain optimistic about meeting it, there was a warning from the accountants that could have repercussions on Rafa Benitez's spending plans.

Benitez has already admitted he may have to sell to top up a limited budget, and there were more concerns for the Liverpool manager after accountants KPMG LLP delivered a sombre assessment.

Referring to the losses incurred by parent company Kop Football (Holdings) Ltd, they said: 'The directors have initiated negotiations to secure the replacement finance required by the group, and they are ongoing.

'These conditions indicate the existence of a material uncertainty which may cast significant doubt on the group's and parent company's ability to continue as a going concern.'

Worryingly for Benitez, the figures underline how revenue from the Champions League and Barclays Premier League is being swallowed up to service the parent company's loans.
Glen Johnson
David Silva

Losing out: Benitez had hoped to stage multi-million pound bids to land Portsmouth full-back Glen Johnson and Valencia winger David Silva this summer

The manager was hoping for substantial backing in the transfer market but has already seen Barry sign for Manchester City and is beginning to lose hope over his other two main targets, Portsmouth's Johnson and David Silva of Valencia.

His overall budget is believed to be as little as £15m, plus anything generated from sales, and there are questions over whether he can afford Johnson or Silva, let alone both.

Chelsea's interest in Portsmouth right back Johnson can only inflate his asking price, while Valencia's reluctance to accept a £15m bid for Silva continues to block the Spain winger's route to Anfield.

Benitez has been forced to consider cheaper alternatives, such as Middlesbrough striker Tuncay and Portsmouth centre back Sylvain Distin, but there is at least a ray of hope for him in the form of possible new investors.

Sportsmail understands three representatives of the India-based GMR infrastructure company, who hold the franchise for the Delhi Daredevils cricket team in the Indian Premier League, have met intermediaries acting on behalf of Liverpool's American owners to discuss a takeover.

Should Hicks and Gillett finally relinquish control, Benitez could at least count on greater transfer funding but may still struggle to convince Xabi Alonso to remain at Anfield after a £20m bid from Real Madrid and interest from Manchester City.

Alonso almost joined Juventus last summer and has now reluctantly concluded he may have to end a five-year stay at Liverpool after sensing Benitez is prepared to sacrifice him to raise funds.

Arsenal's Adebayor received offers but not from Milan
05.06.09 | Ian Ferris

Emmanuel Adebayor's agent has refuted press suggestions his client is on the brink of a move to Milan.

Reports claimed the Rossoneri were preparing a £15 million bid for the striker.

The player’s agent, Stephane Courbis, admitted several clubs were interested in the Togo international hitman, but not as yet Milan.

"Yesterday I met with Arsene Wenger, but we did not talk about a possible sale because at the moment there is no offer on the table that interests us," he told Calcio Mercato.

"The Milan owners have made no contact with me. There are other offers, but none that Emmanuel finds interesting. It is not right to talk about things at the moment because Ade is an Arsenal player."

If Adebayor was to leave for 15m i'd be so pissed off!!

Its annoying teams like Arsenal and Liverpool are very limited in terms of transfer money, they would both make more of an impact in europe if they did.

Not like they didn this year arsenal semi's and liverpool quarters, but it could be eve better.

Just shows both do good with limited money.

Up until this Arsenal have been on an even tighter budget.

Hopefully both will do well next season.

Ranger's duo eye September return

Quote:

Rangers are likely to be without midfielders Kevin Thomson and Maurice Edu for the start of the next campaign.

Thomson, who impressed in the early part of last season, has been working with the club's physios at Murray Park to recover from a cruciate injury.

Although he has made good progress since suffering the injury against Kilmarnock last November, a September return is seen as a realistic target.

And Edu's recovery from knee ligament damage will take another three months.

It is a blow for the American midfielder who broke into the Rangers first team in the closing weeks of the season.

Edu's injury was sustained while helping his team clinch the Scottish Premier League title on the last day of the campaign at Tannadice.

The US international has had a successful operation on his knee but he has been forced to withdraw from his country's World Cup qualifiers against Costa Rica and Honduras and the Confederations Cup tournament later this month.

Everton transfer status.

Tottenham eyeing Everton's Arteta

Tottenham are eyeing Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta.

Harry Redknapp wants to bring in three quality players this summer, partly funded by a culling of the first-team squad.

The manager reportedly sees Arteta as providing significant improvement to his midfield, with David Bentley set to leave White Hart Lane. Tom Huddlestone and Jermaine Jenas's futures are also in question.

But Spurs would face competition for 27-year-old Arteta from Manchester City, according to The London Paper.

Man City to make opening £12M offer for Everton's Lescott

Manchester City are ready to make an opening offer for Everton defender Joleon Lescott.

The Times says City boss Mark Hughes is expected to make an opening bid of about £12 million for Lescott.

But David Moyes, the Everton manager, is fiercely opposed to selling the England defender and is unlikely to consider accepting a bid of anything less than £20 million.

Man city target lescott after arsenal show interest just like in barry -.-

Unexpected....

Fulham to help Chelsea land Kaka?
09:58 AM 04 June, 2009
Fulham's interest in Kaka's brother could help Chelsea in their quest to land Kaka himself

Kaka's list of personal demands could scupper a move to Real Madrid: he wants £10m for his father, £10m for himself and £1m signing on fee for his brother, Digao, who must also be signed.

Meanhwile, Fulham boss Roy Hodgson is an admirer of the 23-year-old defender, Digao, who is currently on loan at Standard Liege from Milan.

If Fulham get Digao, the brothers could be reunited in west London with Kaka up the King's Road at Chelsea.
