Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has praised the hard work and integrity of his successor David Moyes.

The Everton boss has signed a six-year deal to take over at Old Trafford from 1 July when Ferguson retires.

At the club's awards night, Ferguson, 71, said: "What I know of David is he's hard working and has integrity.

"He's also got a work ethic about him and he's a serious football man. I think these are the qualities he's going to need."

Ferguson, who will stay on at Old Trafford as a director and ambassador, added that it had been difficult to keep his decision to retire a secret.

"I was sitting with my family and you forget you're actually going to retire and talk about next year. You're afraid you're going to blurt out something else but I didn't tell my sons until the end of March," he said.

"I only told my brother [Martin] the night before it was announced and he wasn't too pleased."

Ferguson, who will take charge of his final game against West Brom on Sunday, admitted that it had been an emotional week after 26 years with the club.

"When I announced it to the staff, I was a bit blubby, you know," he said.

"I think, funnily enough, the last few days have been hard and Monday night, after the parade, I slept for 10 hours. I was absolutely gone - knackered."

Academy prize for Pearson

Ben Pearson has been named the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year for 2013.

The midfielder was a regular in Paul McGuinness' Academy team, featuring 26 times, and scored the team's first and last goals of the league campaign.

However, the 18-year-old from Oldham has far more to his game than hitting the net as he is able to exert control on proceedings from the middle of the park and dictate the play with his passing and tackling skills. A fierce competitor, he has many strings to his bow and is rightly being tipped for a bright future.

After captaining England Under-18s against Belgium recently, it has been a terrific year for Pearson, who has also made appearances for Warren Joyce's Under-21 and Reserves sides.

"I'm really proud," said the teenager. "We've had a long season but I think we've done well - apart from in the FA Youth Cup. It's been a good campaign really.

"Most of my game is really about tackling and breaking up the play. The club have been really good to me. I've been here since I was a kid really and am just doing the best I can to get this far.

"It's a massive inspiration to get to see the first-team players every day around the training ground and just seeing them walk around. It's dead good!"

Pearson beat off competition from skipper Liam Grimshaw and fellow midfielder James Weir to win the trophy and follows in the footsteps of some famous names such as Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Phil Neville, Wes Brown and Danny Welbeck.

Januzaj voted U21s' star man

Adnan Januzaj has been voted United's Reserve Team Player of the Year for 2013.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...gn=0,1,600,448

The 18-year-old has emerged as a key figure for Warren Joyce's side since the turn of the year and has made an impressive step up in age group as he continues to learn his trade.

After appearing for the first team in last year's pre-season friendly at Aberdeen, Januzaj has become a more rounded footballer, retaining his flair and creative skills but adding tenacity and work ethic to his game under the tutelage of Warren Joyce.

The Brussels-born youngster produced another excellent display in the Under-21s' semi-final victory against Liverpool at Old Trafford this week and has earned praise from both Sir Alex Ferguson and Joyce for his progress.

"It's always a great feeling to be Player of the Year," he said. "I've been working hard and just want to thank all the players, fans and staff. It's been a great season.

"It's hard when you're injured as you want to show everyone what you can do. I couldn't last year so I've done it this year and I'm really proud to be the Player of the Year."

Januzaj polled over half of the fans' vote to win the Denzil Haroun trophy with Marnick Vermijl in second place and captain Tom Thorpe finishing third.
