Wenger: I don't have to sell any of my players - Arsenal as a club are in excellent shape

Arsene Wenger does not need to sell Emmanuel Adebayor or any of his young Gunners.

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas is constantly linked with Barcelona but Wenger is under no pressure to generate cash for new recruits.

He said: 'We do not have to sell because we have a balanced budget. I believe that what is important at this stage is to keep the players you have.

'People think it is a disaster to get to the semi-finals of the Champions League and the FA Cup while finishing fourth. OK, you can do better but if that is a disaster, then the future of the club is very promising.

'Legacy is about leaving the club in every aspect that is important in a good situation. It means you leave a good squad with good young players, a good financial situation and a good structure.

'What is the most important is that the club continues to improve and the state of our club is fantastic.'

Wenger prefers top take a glass-half-full look at Arsenal's achievements in recent years.

He said: 'People say we have not won anything since 2005 which is true but it's how you present it. We were in the Champions League final in 2006, the quarter-finals in 2008 and the semi-finals in 2009. We nearly won the league last year too, so although we haven't won anything it is not as if we haven't been competing at the top level.'

Wengar made some fair points, his young team can only get better, and champions league final quarter final and semi final last 3 years.

3rd in premiership last year only 2 points off second 4 off top place i think.

Man City confident convincing Liverpool's Xabi with bumper offer
05.06.09 | tribalfootball.com

Manchester City are favourites for Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso.

The Mirror says Alonso heads the list of players wanted by the super-rich Manchester club, and manager Mark Hughes even placed him ahead of Gareth Barry as a target.

The City boss wants the pair to form the fulcrum of his midfield, and he is ready to capitalise on a breakdown of the relationship between Alonso and his boss Rafa Benitez to try to tempt him with a £20million bid.

There has already been contact from Real Madrid, and while – contrary to reports – there has yet to be a concrete bid from the Bernabeu, it seems certain they will follow up interest with an offer in the region of £18m.

But the politics at Anfield will prevent a swift conclusion to any deal, and that will allow City the chance to tempt Alonso with a massive deal.

He and his family are happy in the north west of England, and until the end of the season he wanted to remain at Anfield, before tiring of the Kop politics.

Signing for City would allow him to stay where he is settled, and would also offer the huge incentive of a deal that could be worth in the region of an amazing £30m.

Chelsea in for Villa star

Aston Villa face a battle to keep hold of Ashley Young, who is said to be high on Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti's wanted list.

Ancelotti is starting to put together his list of summer transfer targets after taking over at Stamford Bridge this week and reports claim that Young is a target, as the new man bids to draft in a host of new players.

Chelsea have shown a long-term interest in the winger but they could firm up their interest by making an offer for last season's PFA Young Player of the Year.

After losing Gareth Barry to Manchester City, Villa will not want to sell anymore star players this summer but if Chelsea do make an approach they may find it hard to reject a major bid.

Fulham want £15M for Arsenal, Villa target Hangeland
05.06.09 | tribalfootball.com

Fulham have slapped a £15 million price-tag on defender Brede Hangeland.

The Times says the Cottagers hope to dissuade bigger clubs from trying to sign him. Villa are among the clubs interested in the Norway defender.

Martin O’Neill, the Villa manager, has met Randy Lerner, his chairman, in Cleveland, Ohio, but would not be willing to meet Fulham’s valuation of a player who cost £2.5 million in January last year. Arsenal have also been linked with Hangeland.

15m for hangeland, id rather buy lescott for 13m.
