Michael Carrick has been crowned the Players' Player of the Year at the club's annual awards ceremony.

The midfielder has excelled this term, prompting Sir Alex Ferguson to describe this season as Carrick's "best ever for Manchester United."

Every member of the first team squad was asked to vote for their star man of the campaign and they unanimously voted Carrick as their Player of the Year.

Robin scoops goal prize

Quote:

Not surprisingly, Robin van Persie's stunning volley against Aston Villa has been named Goal of the Season at the club's annual awards dinner.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...n=0,93,840,405

The strike was the second goal of the Dutchman's brilliant first-half hat-trick in last month's 3-0 victory which also clinched a 20th league title for the Reds.

Van Persie, whose goal received 70% of the total votes, had put United ahead after just two minutes, before his sublime finish on 13 minutes.

Wayne Rooney collected the ball in his own half before floating a magnificent 40-yard pass into the path of van Persie whose first-time left-foot volley flew past Brad Guzan. On the goal, Robin said recently: "It was instinct. I looked up and thought: 'This ball is so nice, it's too beautiful to take a touch.' Had it been half a metre to the left or right I couldn't have hit it.

Wayne and I had been talking about playing balls in behind the right centre-back all week. We'd talked about it in training almost every day, then before the game Wayne said: 'Robin, don't forget that ball, I'll give you that ball today.' And it was the perfect pass, it was phenomenal. All I had to do was time my run correctly. In the last second I decided to hit it and I was lucky everything fitted together."

Robin beat off competition from Rafael and Wayne Rooney to win the Goal of the Season prize after polling 70% of the votes. Rafael's belter away at QPR was second with Wayne Rooney's long-range effort in the home win over Norwich finishing third.

Sir Bobby: Moyes the man

Quote:

Sir Bobby Charlton believes David Moyes is the right man to replace Sir Alex Ferguson at the helm of Manchester United.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...n=3,24,590,242

The legendary ex-England international is a great admirer of the Everton boss and thinks he has similar qualities to those of the United chief.

"You can never say how much we should appreciate Alex Ferguson because he's been just brilliant," Sir Bobby told MUTV. "He'll be there forever in football history. Marvellous.

"But David Moyes is, I think, a very capable person. He's got a great knowledge of the game and is steeped in the game, very much like Alex, although they're all different. When he comes here, I believe he will think he's in paradise as he's got so many good players and good coaches.

"When Alex decided he'd maybe had enough, I didn't know what to do really but he's just a wonderful person and it [the success] will continue because people have learned a lot from him."

Sir Alex is such a legend and will be missed, but we must back David Moyes next season and give him time/faith because United are a club that believes in them two things and stability/continuity!

Van Persie wins fans' award

Quote:

Manchester United fans have recognised Robin van Persie’s wonderful first season by voting him the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year at the club’s end-of-season awards ceremony at Old Trafford.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...gn=0,1,562,420

The striker picked up the accolade after garnering 41.5 per cent of the combined votes on our seven language websites, to beat Michael Carrick (29 per cent) and David De Gea (11.5 per cent) into second and third place respectively.

"This was always the plan," he laughed. "I have to be fair - it’s beyond expectations. It made such an impact on me from day one, being involved with all the guys. The way they welcomed me made such an impact and, of course, to be able to work with Sir Alex and Mike [Phelan] and all the staff is more than a pleasure.

"I have to say that winning a trophy is fantastic. It’s great but the road to the whole trophy is maybe even nicer. Being together every day and working on details, getting better step-by-step, beating opponents and then the best feeling of all that is the result and the trophy.

"This whole year has been incredible. I have to thank all the boys, the staff and the fans, who since day one, have been unbelievable. It’s been an honour. It’s made such a big impact on me and I’m still thrilled about what’s happened in the last 10 months or so. Hopefully, we can do even better, crack on and win even more trophies."

When asked if the next aim is the Champions League, he replied: "I would love to. I think we showed we can compete with the best. If you look at the game against Real [Madrid] for example, everything was organised perfectly. Our game-plan was working. We were winning so it was a bit harsh how we lost that game but it’s part of football as well. If you want to be a winner, first you have to deal with disappointments. If you look at the whole club, it’s full of winners. Everyone knows how to win and everyone works hard to win and I love that."

Van Persie was keen to pay tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson as he will always cherish the one season he worked under the legendary United boss.

"It’s only been a year I’ve worked with this great manager and great man," he stated. "But, honestly, I must say it’s been a real honour and it’s had such a big impact. Also in the way he is as a person, we get to know each other. Of course, I see him every day and the way he looks after his boys is like we’re his own kids. He’s always protecting us and looking after us. The meetings he does are incredible. It’s been a joy and I’m proud of that."

It was van Persie’s second award of the evening after his stunning volley against Aston Villa was voted Goal of the Season by a huge margin.

The Dutchman’s 25 goals have been the cornerstone of United’s charge to the Barclays Premier League title but his build-up play and work-rate have been equally impressive.

At the club's awards night, Ferguson, 71, said: "What I know of David is he's hard working and has integrity.

"He's also got a work ethic about him and he's a serious football man. I think these are the qualities he's going to need."

Ferguson, who will stay on at Old Trafford as a director and ambassador, added that it had been difficult to keep his decision to retire a secret.

"I was sitting with my family and you forget you're actually going to retire and talk about next year. You're afraid you're going to blurt out something else but I didn't tell my sons until the end of March," he said.

"I only told my brother [Martin] the night before it was announced and he wasn't too pleased."

Ferguson, who will take charge of his final game against West Brom on Sunday, admitted that it had been an emotional week after 26 years with the club.

"When I announced it to the staff, I was a bit blubby, you know," he said.

"I think, funnily enough, the last few days have been hard and Monday night, after the parade, I slept for 10 hours. I was absolutely gone - knackered."

bbfan1991, what do you think on the apointment of Moyes?

Are you happy with it?, are you exited by it?, Do you rate him highly?, Do you like him as a character?, would you have preferred someone else?, are you concerned that he has yet to win a major trophy?, Do you think he'll be a success?

Am I the only one who thought RVP's goal vs West Ham in the FA cup was better then the Villa one???

I must admit at first I wanted Jose because he is a big name, but then I thought that he would not stick around for long.

I like David Moyes and think he has done a great job at Everton, so I have warmed to him becoming Manager because he will be around for the long term and given time/faith by the club and fans because stability is important and also sticking to the traditions e.g. bringing through the youth, winning trophies etc.

As for not winning a trophy it was a concern at first, but then I thought that his record with Everton should not make a difference and at United he will be given more resources and a great structure to try and win trophies, so I am excited for next season and seeing him bring his own personality and ideas to the club/team!

you've got gem, and a hungry one (far more hungrier than Mourinho)

He will carry on the Manchester United that Fergie built, just in the same way Paisley carried on and was even more successful than the house that Shankly built.

He's got 6 years, the fans have to stick by him (and that will be hard for your fans, when all you've known is Fergie)

I predict he'll be hugely successful and i'm making a wild prediction that by the time his six years are up, he will have won at least three titles and two Champions leagues

Correct winners. Carrick does a great job for the team and great to see he is appreciated by the players. Robin has been the hero for the most part with the winning goals this season and has already cemented himself as a fan fave. Goal of the Season was correct too.

Yeah you can't argue with them

Van Persie has been top drawer, and Carrick has finally developed into the player he always promised to be.

Will definitely download the awards show, mainly for Hayley McQueen. Giggs was desperate to demolish her I bet.

Helen McConell looking nice also.

Fully expected RVP to win it. Agree, should of been Carrick. The guy has had to play in an embarrassing midfield this season.

Ferdinand: Catch us if you can

Quote:

Rio Ferdinand has thrown down the gauntlet to Manchester United's rivals, insisting the Reds are ready to launch a staunch title defence under new manager David Moyes.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...gn=5,0,786,582

The centre-back says Sir Alex Ferguson has given his successor every chance of maintaining the club's position at the head of the pack.

"I think this is the way the manager, in his dreams, would have liked to leave the club - in a fit state for someone else to come in and take the reins," said Ferdinand, in an exclusive interview with MUTV.

"We're not going to be looking up to other teams, we're looking down and saying: 'Come and catch us'. We're in a fantastic position. Obviously, Sir Alex's shoes are massive shoes to fill but David Moyes couldn't be walking into a healthier situation. The young players here are hungry and want to win stuff. The senior players have won a lot of things but have still got the desire and the work ethic that the manager has instilled into us. I think that's vital for the future of the football club."

As for his own future, Ferdinand feels he still has plenty to offer at Old Trafford, having been allowed by Sir Alex to manage his own fitness routine in a bid to keep niggling injuries at bay.

"Sir Alex allows you, with other members of staff like the sports science department and physios, to try and work out the way to manage yourself," said the 34-year-old, who announced his retirement from international football yesterday.

"I think that's part of his great management. Some people might try and dictate and say, 'do it this way.' But he gives you that responsibility to work it out for yourself and get to the point where you know what you are doing. He let me do that and it released any kind of pressure. Some managers do put [pressure] on players to be fit all the time. I've been in that situation where I think I need to be fit, I really need to be fit and you almost become a hindrance to the team. It's great for me to get that comfort from the manager. I think, as an older player, you need that towards the end of your career."

With Everton boss Moyes coming in to take charge, Ferdinand admits he, like all his team-mates, will need to impress all over again and start from scratch.

"You've got to prove yourself under the new manager," he said. "He's going to come in with new ideas, new rules and a new regime. No matter how long we've been here, and the likes of Giggsy and myself have been here for many years, we'll be in the same boat as people like Danny Welbeck, Phil Jones and Tom Cleverley. So we've all got to prove ourselves to make sure he thinks we're the right people to start each game."

In the same MUTV interview, Rio reflected on a whirlwind week for the Reds - beginning with the moment when Sir Alex Ferguson informed the players of his impending retirement.

"We came in and there was a notice on the board to say there was a meeting," Ferdinand revealed. "There were rumours in the paper that the manager was going to leave but we were thinking: 'There's no chance he'll be leaving. There are too many good things going on at the club because of the squad he's building'.

"Then he broke the news and the most I remember from it was that it was dead quiet in the room. Even when he left, there was real silence and I think that's just a combination of disappointment and respect as well for the manager's decision. For what he's done for the club, for us as individuals and as a team, you've got to respect his decision. He's been in the game for a long time, he knows what he's doing and I think he deserves a rest."

The atmosphere has since been celebratory of course, from Sir Alex's fitting send-off at Old Trafford to the Premier League trophy parade, during which Rio led the chants and singing on the bus and generally savoured every moment of the latest league triumph. The defender admits some fans might have seen a new side to some of the players.

"I think the fans see us after the games and before the games doing interviews around the training ground and Old Trafford and we're quite serious and straight," he stated. "It's because we're all professional and all directed towards winning and don't want to get out of our comfort zone really. We just get the interviews done and carry on.

"But now it's the end of the season and we've won the league so we can let our hair down, get the party started and we've had a good two weeks. We've had a good few nights out that are well deserved, and the manager has been great because he's let us enjoy it.

"I think I enjoyed my first title [in 2003] unbelievably. When I see now the pictures from the day we won it, I was going bananas! When I think about titles in between, I don't know if I went as crazy, because you take it for granted almost. Now I'm towards the end of my career, I've maybe got a couple of years left and you start really thinking I've got to take it in. I think I took it in this time."

Rio is a class act:). I am glad he is staying at United and thinks he has a few years left in him playing wise and it is important that he stuck around too as one of our experienced players for the David Moyes era to begin soon!
