The wind here in Blackpool is VERY bad, tiles being blown off roofs, windows being blown in, walls collapsing, vans being blown on their sides, all public transport has been shut down.

AnnieK 12-02-2014 08:34 PM

There's trees uprooted here but the wind doesn't seem as bad now

Widespread storm damage in Blackpool today, slates fallen off roofs everywhere, lots of collapsed walls (two of them just on the same street near work), bus stops been blown away, not seen storm damage this widespread before.

The frontage of the Sealife centre was ripped off too

I think what they are saying is that there will be government help and insurance payouts so there is no need for an appeal  understandable enough I suppose given the amount this country pays out in foreign aid. Personally I would donate, we are going to pay for it all indirectly at any rate through taxes and increased insurance premiums so I think it would be good if there was an opportunity to make a contribution. Also I do think some foreign aid should be directed (and probably will) to those affected by the floods.

I agree Vicky, it's out of order.

Money isn't all that matters ffs, they could take note of what other charities are doing and still help out in some way iirc we always send foreign aid when others have natural disasters etc.

Oxfam can clearly see there is a lot of people needing help, they should be ashamed tbqh.

The Red Cross, meanwhile, has been helping with rest centres, evacuations, emergency supplies and providing vehicles in Somerset, and the Thames Valley, where it helped rescue three elderly victims in Wraysbury yesterday.

The charity’s staff and volunteers have also been working in Kent and Sussex, London, and Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.
I know who will be getting donations from me in future.

For what it is worth, I actually think what they said has been taken out of context :D:

Damn right.

The amount of people in this country who donate to oxfam and we have a disaster (cant be classed as anything else really given the scale of the damage in places) and its all screw you, other countries are poorer..get your government to help, blah blah blah

Yeah the government might help(as they should), but then to pay it all back they will target the poorest again via more draconian cuts to get the cash back in the pot. Then in turn charities wont help when our own kids starve because of more cuts, because our country is apparently rich.

The government have committed 5,000 per household and 10 million to farmers (though this doesn't seem alot), I think the point Oxfam is making is a good one, this is not a humanatarian crisis, no one is without shelter, or food or clean water. This is a mess brought about by lack of planning and spending on flood defences, it's down to the government to sort it out, time for them to put some of that foreign aid budget to good use sorting out this mess and shoring up the sea defences for the future. A point made during Prime Ministers questions yesterday is that 500 jobs are to go in the environment agency, the PM would not answer if those jobs were to be reinstated given the recent problems. It is not down to Oxfam or any other Charity to pick up the tab this time.
