I don't think that's conducive to a productive debate.

The fact of the matter is here is that if Brillo and co want to to make incessant threads and posts about Muslims that some people find racially antagonistic, then they also have to be prepared for incessant responses to them. By all means have your opinion, but your right to an opinion is not also a right to have no one criticise that opinion. That would in actual fact be rather...politically correct would it not?

she doesn't single out members does she? that is the difference

To be perfectly honest theres a lot of supposed adults that frequent this section that have a give it out but cant take it way of posting, theres a massive amount if hypocrisy going on specifically in this thread some accusing others of things that they themselves are also guilty of and for those accusing this one and that one of hostility and nastiness ive actually at times witnessed them behaving in the exact same way towards others.

This section of the forum will have heated debates and harsher replies, if members cant handle having thier opinions questioned and sometimes very strong ones at that then this isnt the place for them.

This place has to have someone to single out and pack attack,it was Sam at one time, they got him removed so now they've moved on to Brillo

As far as I'm aware, the person you're talking about rarely if ever used this section of the forum?

Sam got himself removed. Also, that makes no sense because Sam was a BB poster and the people who he had his disagreements with weren't even the same people who post in SDs

Also with the addition of Chuff, Livia and Jaxie there are now, hilariously, 8 or 9 people ganging up to complain about people ganging up - each one of them getting far more petty and aggressive than any of the people who are supposedly "hounding people". Parmnion and Kazanne and arguably Jaxie have joined the thread PURELY to stick a boot in... So I have no idea where this idea of some sort of moral high ground is coming from.

Maybe more people have come into this thread as it's the best thread in months, people are involved and people get a chance to air their grievences, no one is ganging up just people that have the same opinions and it's probably annoying that they have come in here to post .

More importantly - as per the school thread - do you see people with a middle eastern opinion, assume that they are Muslim, and THEN assume sexist motives? Also... Do you think that it's ONLY Muslims who are sexist? Because I know a lot of extremely sexist old pigs (work hazard) and 90% of them are white and British born. Yes, one of the worst is a Muslim guy, who doesn't even like to be served by female staff - BUT - there are at least a dozen other Muslim customers or customers "with the appearance of someone who may be Muslim" who are polite, respectful, chatty and cheerful. You just can't go around judging a whole group of people based on the most extreme examples? Because like I said, there are still plenty of disrespectful, aggressively sexist British men around but you wouldn't judge all British men based on their behaviour.

That's the difference and that's what makes it - shudder to use the term - pretty racist. You make sweeping assumptions about individuals based on what they look like, or where they are from. That's the issue here.

I think you've decided that people don't care about sexism in Muslim communities or that it isn't a problem. Yes, it is a problem. Yes, it should definitely be addressed and not ignored, but if anything your valid points get completely lost as soon as you start making these generalisations... Am I guilty of ruining some of your threads? Probably, yeah, but nowhere near as many as you ruin yourself by losing the focus of the issue and making it about "all" or "most" of a group.

I'll answer your question about sexism if I may. I wouldn't say all men are sexist or all men in any one religion. What I will say is that most religion teaches and promotes sexism. Men of faith are often raised to see women as inferior. For me that is a huge issue.

It doesn't take a genius to work out the intent of such comments and who they're directed at, it is baiting and you know it.

If I started saying 'well it's just those rich old white Tory voters who care about nothing but themselves, they love voting to have the disabled killed' in every political thread I don't think it'd go down very well do you? You can conduct yourself in a manner that is conducive to a civilised debate or start throwing around petty insults, but if one starts them, you should expect them back.

Jamie89 07-11-2017 11:08 AM

I don't think there's much in the way of gang behaviour btw. I might not be that frequent a poster in SD but I read the threads a lot and yes discussions get heated but the 'gang' accusation only seems to come about when there's more people disagreeing with someone's views than there are people agreeing with them, and discussions about serious topics are bound to get heated so I kind of think that when it happens people should just be a bit more grown up about and accept it? it's not about gangs, it's just... people expressing their views. When it's reduced to 'omg you're ganging up on me' that's when it becomes childish and just not something you'd expect at all from a subforum dedicated to 'serious debates' and it becomes really off putting to actually contribute - I often find myself reading a thread when it's already a few pages long by which point it's already arguments and jibes or something completely off topic so I just don't see the point.

that's fine Josy but if one person is infracted for giving it out while another isn't its hardly a level playing field, and let's face it getting infracted is usually down to a member hammering the report button rather than a mod picking up on any offence, would you agree or not?

Admittedly, I replied in a more obviously personal way, but the fact is you (re)entered the thread (I forgot about the earlier toffee apple thing) today simply to applaud, agree with and yes, gang up with people who were quite clearly on the attack. You do this a lot, in a lot of threads, you only enter to say "I agree with this :clap1: " and I find that frustrating but will admit that in this case I handled it re-actively and sarcastically.

oh you mean like the much loved "cat ladies" innocent remark which a lot of members found hilarious but apparently was not meant to offend

That is what the forum is for ,or do I have to ask permission what day and time i can post? that post was one I would have posted ,so no point in posting the same old (same for any other posts I agree with)that is why I used the emotion and said I agreed

You singled me out inaccurately in your blog, so if you give it out, you need to take it back..:nono:

What? Is this meant to mean that the place has gone downhill because there are gay members?

I agree with you but religion is so ingrained in people it really needs to evolve and change by itself, you can't just force people into thinking differently(even the ones who are being treated badly). Christianity is alot older than Islam and that had to evolve on it's own as well, in other words the ones in it have to change it by wanting to change it

That debate has been done ad nauseum so I won't entertain it again but if you had such an issue with a remark you found to be baiting and insulting to members of the forum, why don't you have an issue with a poster denigrating young people and people on the left with petty and inflammatory comments?

It is my thread do forgive me for posting on it. Are we really sticking the boot in or just taking the opportunity to be frank and tell it how we see it? The problem is as much as you accuse Brillo of not seeing her inclination in her posting you are guilty of that very thing. You dive in to mock and goad people and expect them to just take it without pointing out that is what you do. If that is 'sticking the boot in' you taught me well.

Cherie not one member on this forum knows if anyone else has been infracted or not so this scenario isnt realistic and tbh is just used as a deflection tactic a lot of the time when people are infracted and cant handle the fact that they broke a rule and were punished for doing so, a lot of the time posts that are infracted arent down to reports for a specific post its down to us having to read through the threads from the very start and see where it all kicked off, who started it, who took it too far and so on.
