Tottenham and Liverpool On Alert After Boro Admit Downing Is For Sale Submitted by Alan James on Fri, 2009-06-05 17:48. A bidding-war looks likely following the confirmation that Middlesbrough are prepared to sell one of their star players. Middlesbrough chief executive Keith Lamb has sanctioned the sale of England winger Stewart Downing should the club receive an acceptable offer for the academy graduate. Downing is recovering from a foot injury sustained in the final home game of last season following a challenge from Aston Villa’s Stilian Petrov. Some doubt has been expressed about Downing’s likely recovery time, but Lamb isn’t expecting such concerns to put off any interested parties. Lamb said: “Who knows whether Stewart will be here in August. If he is he will be playing for us in the Championship. But if the right offer comes along he will be allowed to leave.” He added: “It has been suggested he could be out for as long as six months but he is quite a good healer and we hope he will be back before then.” “There is no reason why Stewart won't make a full recovery. He has been told that by the surgeon and he believes it. If someone wants to take a chance on him now, it's up to them. It's out of our hands.” Middlesbrough need to balance the books following their relegation from the Barclays Premier League, and the Teesside club are willing to listen to offers for a player who has been with his hometown club since his school days and came through the ranks at the Middlesbrough Academy. Downing handed in a written transfer request to Middlesbrough on 5 January, with Tottenham Hotspur making several bids to lure him to White Hart Lane; but Middlesbrough refused to sanction any move with their own Premiership status in considerable doubt at the time. The news of his availability is certain to grab the attention of Spurs boss Harry Redknapp. However, other teams will be interested, with Liverpool reportedly also tracking him. |

Lawrenson fears Liverpool decline
Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson fears the club could be left behind by their rivals as a result of the financial situation at Anfield. The club's owners lost £42.6m last year and he is worried that could affect their ability to buy new players. "One or two of the top clubs are already doing the business, and buying players," Lawrenson told BBC Sport. "If Liverpool have to wait they're already going to be behind the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea." Lawrenson added it would be a "great blow" to the Anfield side if they started next season with a weaker squad than this year "because that isn't going to win the Premier League". The loss was mainly caused by the £36m of interest payments that Kop Football Holdings - the company set up by American owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks to buy and run the club - had to make to service the debt it took on when buying the club in March 2007. Accounts for the year showed the club itself made a profit of £10.2m with a record turnover of £160m. But auditors KPMG LLP warned that the need to refinance loans of £350m by 24 July "may cast significant doubt on the group's and parent company's ability to continue as a going concern". |

Liverpool Football Club ran Manchester United close in this season's Premier League title race, and while there has been disappointment at losing out on the championship prize, coming second has played a crucial off-field role.
Clinching runners-up spot means Liverpool is guaranteed passage to the lucrative Champions League group stages next season, with its gate monies, TV revenues, and other commercial spin-offs. And that financial boost could not be more timely - for the Anfield club's two American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett are fast approaching the 24 July deadline to repay the £350m they owe to banks RBS and Wachovia. Latest accounts show the parent company of Liverpool FC, owned by the duo, lost £42.6m in the year to August 2008. Annual accounts for Kop Football Holdings show how much money is being drained to service the costs of the parent company's loans - with interest payments accounting for £36.5m of Kop's losses. But auditor KPMG has noted that the club's owners are confident they can secure the funding, and the US pair are said to be relaxed about obtaining a refinancing package. The pair bought Liverpool in February 2007 and since then have squabbled with each other, alienated some fans, failed to progress with a promised new stadium, and seen potential sales of the club fall away. |
Liverpool will be fine, as Everton change their shirt sponsorship to Netto.

Have you got any transfer rumours today? |
Here is one for free
Arsenal are apparantly interested in signing form Juventus BUFFON & CHIELLINI!! This deal would be good for both teams as Arsenal need experience at the back and Juventus could do with the money to strengthen the side. Also will be people please stop linking Marcos Senna to Arsenal. And saying he will cost 10 million pounds!!! You must be joking. At his age anything over a million would be mad! |
