Football League new boys Burton Albion have been drawn away to Reading in the first round of the Carling Cup.

Elsewhere West Bromwich Albion, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, will travel to Bury.

Newcastle and Middlesbrough, who were also relegated into the Championship, received byes for the first round.

Top-flight clubs will not enter the competition until the second round, although teams that have qualified for Europe are introduced a stage later.

That means holders Manchester United as well as Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Everton, Aston Villa and Fulham will enter in the third round.

The final is set to be held at Wembley Stadium on 28 February.

Last season Manchester United beat holders Tottenham 4-1 on penalties in the final at Wembley.

Newcastle have been told by the Football Association not to travel to the Dutch city of Utrecht for a pre-season friendly later this month.

The trip was thrown into doubt after it emerged local rivals Sunderland would be playing in Holland at the same time.

In a statement, the FA said it had "reluctantly withdrawn permission" for Newcastle to face Utrecht on 26 July.

Sunderland are due to play in the Amsterdam Tournament from 24-26 July, some 30 miles away from Utrecht.

Concerns were raised that trouble could be sparked, with supporters of both clubs likely to be booked on the same flights and ferries.

Amsterdam's mayor, Job Cohen, initially called for Sunderland to withdraw from the tournament, but the FA ruled that Newcastle will have to miss out as tickets for Sunderland's trip had already gone on sale.

BECKHAM TO RETURN ?

Former England captain David Beckham would consider a return to the Premier League to boost his chances of playing at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The 34-year-old midfielder, who plays for Los Angeles Galaxy, said he would never turn out for another English side when he left Manchester United in 2003.

But in a U-turn, he stated: "Never say never. I would definitely consider it.

"When I left my heart was in Manchester - I couldn't see myself playing against United. Now I wouldn't rule it out."

Beckham has a five-year Major League Soccer contract, which began in 2007 and allows for him to spend the off-season on loan at a European club.

Manchester City are in negotiations to sign Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor, BBC Sport understands.

The Togo international, 25, is believed to be on sale for about £25m after two-and-a-half seasons at the London club.

Adebayor, who scored 16 times for the Gunners last season, has also been linked to AC Milan and Chelsea.

City are intent on building a new-look attack and are on the verge of signing Carlos Tevez, while they have already captured Roque Santa Cruz this summer.
