Welbeck interviews Rio

Quote:

Danny Welbeck usually spends his time scoring goals, but when the players were given a first look at the new United home kit, we asked Danny to interview his friend and team-mate Rio Ferdinand to see what the defender made of the new jersey.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...gn=0,8,600,230

DW: So Rio, are you excited to see the new kit?
RF: I am, yeah. It’s always good to have a look at the new kit before it comes out.

Will you be wearing the collar up or down?
Down. There’s only one person who should be wearing the collar up and that’s Eric Cantona. He’s retired now.

One of your fellow team members has worn it up in today’s photoshoot...
Who’s that? Is it Wazza?

You’ll see the pictures...
Is it Wazza?

That’s a good guess.
Why’s he trying to do a Cantona? There’s only one Cantona! [laughs]

That’s Wazza for you, isn’t it?... How important is the look and the feel of the shirt?
I think the look’s really important. When you feel comfortable in a shirt you can go out and express yourself maybe that little bit better, even if it’s just adding that one per cent to your well-being. This kit fits nicely, it’s comfortable, the texture’s nice... I don’t know too much about the ins and outs of the technology, whether it retains water or the water runs off it, for instance, but I do like the kit. It’s nice.

Going into the United dressing room on a matchday, how good is it to see the kit lined up?
As long as your name’s in there you’re happy. You don’t want to go in there and see everybody else’s shirt and yours is still in the bag! I just think back to when I was a kid and I always dreamed about wearing certain kits. I dreamt of wearing the England kit and the England kit was the first one I ever owned. My uncle bought it for me – the red one. To be honest, though, I’m still like a kid when I see a new kit. You want to feel it, you want to see how the socks fit, the smell, the texture... I don’t think you ever lose that.

On a matchday do you have any routines you follow?
Have you not seen them?

Well, I’m usually too busy doing my own thing.
Mine change over the years. If I’m playing well then I’ll continue to do certain things. If I’ve had a beast then I’ll change a few things. One thing I do is I always splash water on my face in the tunnel.

I’ve seen that, to be fair.
And as soon as I go over the line to go out onto the pitch I jump in the air. And then I run over to the corner flag. The list goes on and on... I have certain foods I eat too.

If you miss something out, does it play on your mind?
I try not to let it. It used to when I was younger but I try not to let it now. I just get through it and carry on. I don’t let it weigh me down.

Rafael relishing Brazil break

Quote:

Rafael is relishing the opportunity to revel in the glory of a third Barclays Premier League title whilst at home in Brazil.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...=0,199,543,400

The Reds' right-back is having a break over the summer in his homeland after a successful campaign on a personal and collective level. Although his red card against Chelsea will rule him out of the first game of next season, the 22-year-old has certainly earned the chance to enjoy himself in the South American sunshine.

When asked by Inside United where he stores his medals, he replied: "To be honest, I give them to my Dad and he has a room in Brazil. It’s nice as he has many things in there – shirts, important jerseys, boots, shinpads, everything. It’s nice.

"I'm going back home this summer. I play beach-volleyball there. I like it and I have [facilities] at my home now as well. I love to play it with my friends. I will stay there for all the summer so it’s nice to be with my friends. It’s very enjoyable.

"You know what I miss most? When I go back, I always like Fridays when I have an old friend around and we play football and have a barbeque after that. I miss that, you know, because it’s good. We have music too. We bring some guys to play songs like samba – I enjoy that a lot. It relaxes me back there. Sometimes you have to do these things. It’s a hard season so, when I go on holiday, I want to relax with my friends and family."

I hope that Rafael enjoys his deserved break:).

Neville rates Kagawa

Quote:

Gary Neville is expecting bigger things from Shinji Kagawa next season but believes the Japanese star will have no fixed position in the United team.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...n=1,18,481,197

Shinji enjoyed a promising first campaign at Old Trafford, in which he featured both in an attacking central midfield role and on the left wing for the champions.

Some observers feel Kagawa will eventually establish himself behind a main striker, a position in which he was so effective for his former club Borussia Dortmund.

But Reds legend Neville, who is now a club ambassador and TV pundit, reckons incoming manager David Moyes will continue to deploy the midfielder in different areas.

The ex-captain told ManUtd.jp: “It was a stop-start season because he had some injuries and hasn’t settled into a definite position yet, which is something he is going to have to work out in the next 12 months.

“His best position is in a central role because that’s where he played for Dortmund, and he will feel he can influence the game the most there.

“But at times, earlier on in the season when he was off the front, he was a little bit lost. I preferred him on the left-hand side so he could watch the game from a different position.

“You can get the best out of players like Shinji by playing them in different positions. In Europe, maybe he will play off the front and in the Premier League on the left, but I don’t think he will be fixed in one position."

Neville believes Shinji offers something different to the United team and highlighted the numerous assets he feels will come to the fore in 2013/14.

"He will be better next season," Neville added. "Towards the end of this season he showed glimpses of what he could do, particularly in the Norwich game and at West Ham, which I think was his best match.

"He is an intelligent player with good energy, he can spot a run and his own runs are excellent, he is tidy on the ball, he can get out of tight situations and I think we will see more of a goalscoring influence and a final-third impact next season.

"That’s what he will want from himself, but I think the best is yet to come. That is the overriding thing for Shinji Kagawa."

Nice words by Gary Neville about Shinji Kagawa:). I think that Shinji will be much better next season too now he had this debut season to settle in and adjust to the United/Premier League style of play in England.

Gill: Plans in the pipeline

Quote:

United chief executive David Gill has revealed that plans are in the pipeline to arrange more Legends games in the future.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...gn=0,1,623,232

The Reds' veterans tackled their Real Madrid counterparts at the weekend as a crowd in excess of 60,000 raised over £800,000 for the Manchester United Foundation. It was an enjoyable occasion for all involved and Gill feels another world-famous club could provide the opposition in a two-legged charity affair similar to the one organised against the Spanish side.

"I think we will look to do it every couple of years probably," Gill informed ManUtd.com. "That's our plan. We don't want to do it every year but we can do something every two years.

"An away game with another big European giant - play them away and then come back to Old Trafford in 2015. It's something we want to do and the most important thing is it raises a fantastic amount of money to be put to worthwhile causes by the Foundation to further their aims."

There was plenty of interest generated in the family-themed occasion with top chart acts JLS, Tinchy Stryder and Amelia Lily ensuring a spectacular afternoon of entertainment at the Theatre of Dreams.

"It was fantastic," he said of Sunday's Red Heart United day. "It was a beautiful event and a beautiful occasion. It raised a lot of money for a great cause so we're delighted.

"The weather was fantastic for Manchester too and you saw the enthusiasm of the crowd and the players really enjoyed it - people like Ruud [van Nistelrooy] coming back and scoring a great goal at the Stretford End. It was a great event with the artists coming in but a lot of work has gone on from the Foundation staff and club staff. These events don't just happen - a lot of great work was put in behind the scenes to make it the day it was."

Van Nistelrooy's goal was the highlight of the match itself from a United perspective as the Reds were unlucky to lose 2-1 to Real, with the Spaniards claiming a 5-3 aggregate triumph.

"In the first half, Edwin [van der Sar] kept us in the game clearly, as he's done over the years, but when Ruud swapped sides and played for us, he added some pace in attack," added Gill. "We could've scored when Dwight [Yorke] hit the bar and it was a decent game but the occasion and what it means was the most important thing."

The chief executive departs his role at the end of the month but is retaining a place on the board and will still see United in action regularly.

"Maybe I'll be more relaxed now," he replied, when asked if he can celebrate goals with even more gusto. "We'll see! I'm leaving at the end of June so that's another four weeks and it's been a great, great ride and I've enjoyed it. I'll still be a director so I'm coming to the games but it's now David Moyes and Ed Woodward doing the player stuff.

"I can read the papers and think: 'Is that really happening?' You never know whether it is and it's often not the case, it's just in the papers! It's been brilliant and anyone who works for this club really cherishes it and enjoys it. That's been the case for me and I'm looking forward now."

Great news!

Interesting quotes:). David Moyes is a likeable and intelligent guy. I have faith in him and all United fans will need to give him time, excited about this new era.

Basically just saying what every manager expects.

bbfan1991 06-06-2013 08:42 PM

True, but it shows what his intentions are.

My gut feeling is that Rooney will stay and I think Moyes would play him upfront where WR feels is still his best position, if he stays Rooney will need to be committed to the cause without all of this drama.

Ryan57 06-06-2013 08:54 PM

I'd imagine every manager expects 100%, seven days a week though.

However, Meulensteen told ELF Voetball he was not leaving the club and remained an employee at United.

"So far I will report on July 1. I am still under contract at the club," he said.

"I didn't step down, and also I was not sacked by Manchester United. I am still employed."
YES! :worship:

Quote:

Former Manchester United and England star Brian Greenhoff has died at the age of 60.

The skilful centre-half, who also played in midfield, passed away at his home in Rochdale this morning.

Brian, who was born in Barnsley, joined United in 1968 after representing Yorkshire Schoolboys.

He played in the same team as his brother, Jimmy, who joined the Reds in 1976.

Brian lifted the FA Cup with his beloved United in 1977 and won a Second Division winners medal in 1975.

He made 271 appearances for the Reds, scoring 17 times and won 18 caps for his country.

Brian's first-team bow came at the age of just 20 in 1973 and played his last game for United in 1979.

He was worshipped by the Stretford End and something of a cult hero with fans recognising him as one of their own.

Brian headed back across the Pennines to join Leeds United following his stint at Old Trafford and later went on to play for and coach Rochdale.

He moved with his family to Menorca before returning to Rochdale and last year wrote an autobiography.

Police were called to Brian's address this morning following reports of a sudden death as a matter of procedure.

The case has now been passed to the coroner.
60 is too young an age to go at. R.I.P.

De Gea makes winning start

Quote:

David De Gea kept his gloves clean as Spain made a winning start in the UEFA Under-21 Championships, recording a slender 1-0 win over Russia in Jerusalem on Thursday.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...,731,3456,2009

The Manchester United goalkeeper played a full match as part of an experienced team that is hoping to win back-to-back European titles, although Julen Lopetegui's champions were partly frustrated by a combination of their own awry finishing and some stubborn Russian defending.

In the end, the match was ultimately decided by substitute and debutant Álvaro Morata, whose headed goal eight minutes from time means Spain sit joint-top of Group B ahead of Sunday’s clash with Germany, who lost their opener to Netherlands.

Elsewhere in the tournament, incoming Reds forward Wilfried Zaha hopes to face Norway on Saturday after missing England’s disappointing 1-0 defeat to Italy earlier in the week.

The former Crystal Palace star, who will officially join his new team-mates at Old Trafford on 1 July, was an unused substitute against the Italians but manager Stuart Pearce has confirmed the player trained on Thursday and will be in contention to start this weekend.

In reality, the Three Lions must win the match to stand any realistic chance of qualifying for the semi-finals on 15 June.

Well done to DDG and Spain:).

Uruguay U20 international Guillermo Varela says he is to have a medical at Manchester United on Friday.

The Penarol full-back spent time on trial at Old Trafford at the end of last season and travelled to London from Uruguay on Thursday, speaking to Futbol a lo Penarol radio before he left.

He said: "I will have a medical on Friday and on Saturday I join the Uruguay Under-20 national team.

"I will have to learn English, Rodolfo Catino [Penarol's club treasurer] taught me something, the structure is impressive."

Catino also spoke to Futbol a lo Penarol radio before travelling to England.

He added: "The deal has been agreed, we now have to discuss some points, there won't be any percentage regarding any future transfer.

"The deal can be as much as 2.8 million Euros. Guille will adapt quickly to Manchester."

Manchester United have yet to comment on any deal for Varela.

On Friday, Manchester United reached an agreement with Club Atlético Peñarol to sign Uruguayan defender Guillermo Varela.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...gn=0,1,600,448

Here, we assess the highly-rated youngster and learn more about his promising career...

The basics: Varela, who was born in Montevideo on 24 March 1993, is an ambitious full-back who plays on the right flank for South American giants Penarol in his native Uruguay.

The background: The 20-year-old has made one first-team appearance at the Centenario Stadium but is a regular for Uruguay's Under-20s with nine caps to his name.

The links: Guillermo recently completed a trial at Carrington and later spoke positively about the experience to South American radio station Tirando Paredes: “I have trained with the first-team. I am very happy and I was received very well. It was a surprise to get the chance to test myself with Manchester United. I'm glad and happy, and grateful to Penarol who allowed me to travel. I was treated so well and Chicharito helped me a lot.”

The manager: “This is what he deserves. It is a shame to see him go but you can’t deny him the opportunity to join a club like this.” – Penarol head coach Jorge Da Silva.

The future: After reaching an agreement at Carrington on Friday, Varela's next step is to fly to Turkey to represent Uruguay at the World Under-20 Championships – where future team-mates Angelo Henriquez (Chile), Sam Johnstone, Tom Thorpe and Larnell Cole (England) are also taking part. The tournament begins on Friday 21 June.

Zaha buy upholds traditions

Quote:

The signing of Wilfried Zaha upholds United's tradition of maintaining a strong English presence within the playing squad, according to David Gill.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...n=0,56,590,275

The Reds' outgoing chief executive wrapped up a deal for the tricky winger in the final transfer of his time in office, and sees the deal as exciting business for the Barclays Premier League champions.

“It’s quite interesting that for England recently we had five players in the team, which is good for us," says Gill, in the club's official new book Champions 20|13.

"The backbone of Manchester United has always been this way. Matt Busby had it and Alex [Ferguson] has nurtured it himself – this mix between British or English players and foreigners – and that’s what this club is about.

"It’s going to be a big learning curve for him [Zaha], he knows that. But I think he’s going to be an exciting Manchester United player; that’s our view. He’s something different. He can beat a man, he can play in the middle or wide. It’s great for us."

Zaha was immediately loaned back to Palace after completing his January transfer to Old Trafford and helped the Eagles to secure promotion back to the Barclays Premier League via the Championship play-offs.

“Seeing where our squad was at, it wasn’t appropriate to bring him in back in January," said Gill. "It was better for him to continue playing with Palace before joining us in the summer. So we did a deal and that was a precondition, really. We were very happy when we spoke to the chairman of Palace that it was only to be done on that basis.

“He’s a player we knew and Alex had been following. We’d seen him and we were scouting him a lot in the Championship – a lot of teams were – and we just felt that because of his age, his potential and what he can bring to Manchester United it was the right thing to do – even if he’s still quite raw in a lot of respects, as a young man."

Ex-Red knocks out England

Quote:

There was a tale of Manchester United players past and future as England Under-21s bowed out of the European Championships with one game to spare.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...n=0,78,800,376

Even though the Reds' incoming winger Wilfried Zaha returned from injury to start, the Three Lions were comfortably beaten 3-1 by Norway for whom ex-United midfielder Magnus Wolff Eikrem fired in the third goal, via the underside of the crossbar.

West Brom defender Craig Dawson pulled one back for England from the penalty spot, but the damage had really been done in the first half when Fredrik Semb Berge and Jo Inge Berget, Eikrem's colleague at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's club Molde, put Norway 2-0 up.

The result means England, who lost their tournament opener to Italy 1-0, cannot qualify for next weekend's semi-finals. Tuesday's match against hosts Israel will only decide which of the two teams finishes bottom of Group A.
