Finally got around to watching Ready Player One...

I loved the visuals and the style, and I liked all of the little references and the nostalgic "Back To The Future" music that kept playing :joker:...

HOWEVER...

The acting is more or less abysmal, the storyline is paper thin when it isn't just being plain daft, the social commentary and message (if there is one) is confused and half-baked, and the ending. Oh the ending. :umm2:. "And the Oasis that everyone escapes to because the real world is trash? Well obviously we kept that going because y'all love it but it's going to be shut on Tuesdays and Thursdays whilst I'm balls deep in my new girlfriend and I don't gaf what you do with your time soz lol."

Oh and the "VR technology" was stupid, inconsistent, and didn't make sense. People running around the street with a VR headset on, not simply running into walls. People flailing around their room and not just bouncing off a coffee table. Explosions etc. in the oasis "zeroing out" groups of players who are grouped together physically in the real world... even though you can run around wherever you want in the oasis, so there's absolutely NO reason that people grouped together in the Oasis being killed, would actually be in physical proximity outside?? Reeehhhh.

They should just have made it a Matrix-style virtual world where people are totally immersed, the VR helmets and suits just didn't make sense.

Honestly can't give it more than 5/10 because the plot holes and logic were so bad that they were immersion breaking, and that took away from the visuals and sound design (which were near flawless).

But Niamh at one point there's a group of kids LITERALLY RUNNING FULL SPEED DOWN A STREET wearing VR headsets! What!

My other favourite bit is when the girl is like "You'll fink I'm ugly in reals :(" because she has a vague discolouration on her face... but then she's blatantly NOT self conscious at all as soon as they meet :joker:.

OH AND the fact that he barely gives a **** for more than 3 minutes when his aunt and presumably dozens of other people he knows get killed . "Oh no! Aunty... err... Sue, was it? Moira? Err... oh nooo!"

It was entertaining, like I said the little references were great and the visuals and sound design were perfect. I also loved the whole Shining sequence. But it just wasn't... "good" :joker:.

user104658 03-04-2019 01:46 PM

Also literally ALL of the in-Oasis stuff was 10x better than the "Real world" stuff.

The TS scoring system is only on the actual quality of the thing, though :nono:.

For example me and my wife LOVE "Ex On The Beach" - it's had me in literal tears laughing before - but that's some straight up 3.5/10 telly right there :joker:.

Like some things are a 10/10 because they're a 2/10 :flutter:.

No Niamh scoring always takes into account how entertained I am, that's a very important factor to take into consideration if you're going to give 2 hours of your time to something (or even more if its a TV show)

Orphan (2009)

Staring Isabelle Fuhrman, Vera Farmiga, Peter Skarsgaard and C.C.H Pounder

The film is about a couple (Farmiga and Skarsgard) who, after their third child was stillborn, decide to adopt a Russian girl from an Orphanage. The girl, called Esther, is kind, polite, intelligent, well mannered and friendly. She looks like every parent's dream child. But there is something wrong with Esther....

One of the best and most underrated psychological horror films there is. Magnificent performance from Fuhrman's Esther, who is terrifying, psychotic and menacing. I can't believe she wasn't nominated for an Oscar.

The twist is one of the best I've ever seen. I didn't see it coming!

10/10

I need to finish off Love, Simon.

Aquaman

...

I enjoyed it. The storyline is obviously pretty simple and the character is just Jason Momoa but it's a good action film. 7/10

Niamh. 05-04-2019 01:30 PM

Did you say just Jason Mamoa??? :o

Yeah he’s in Aquaman

Also, his surname is spelt “Momoa”

I loved Aquaman, easily my favourite DCEU film. Although “Shazam!” Has the potential to surpass it. It’s got amazing reviews so far

Captain Marvel - 8/10 - Not the best MCU movie but it was still a great film! Brie was brilliant as Carol/Captain Marvel. I feel though she isn't as powerful as they made her out to be on this film but then again there's always End Game. I stan Goose the cat

That was one of my main concerns from the film. For someone who's been billed as ''The most powerful MCU character'' she didn't seem to be nowhere near it.

Prior to unlocking her full potential near the film, she was a pre IW Iron man. Even when she unlocked it, I didn't think she was that powerful. All she did was defeat Kree spaceships.

She's nowhere near Thor and especially Thanos

Exactly I agree! they could have done a lot more to make her seem powerful but i hope they do that during End Game but i don't want her to be the one to defeat Thanos. I hope we get Captain Marvel 2 and tbh Brie has potential to be in my top 5 Avenger depending on how she is during End Game and if there's a second film. Irrelevant to CM I'm pleased to find out that Black Widow is getting her own movie and apparently Emma Watson will be on it (but that's just a rumour that i hope is true) I've always wanted a Black Widow movie.

LaLaLand 05-04-2019 07:27 PM

We're The Millers - 7.5/10 - didn't have high hopes but surprisingly good. :laugh2:
