Downing is not over-rated and is definitely not terrible. He will do well for Aston Villa because they will make good use of him.
Bullshit, it shows how bad the England side is when he can get on the fringes of it, he's shite.

Cristiano Ronaldo believes Michael Owen will be a worthy successor to him as Manchester United's number seven.

Owen was signed after Ronaldo joined Real Madrid for £80m this summer.

"Michael Owen is an experienced player. He has played at the biggest club" said Ronaldo, who scored 117 goals in 290 appearances for United.

"He has everything to win at United. He is at a fantastic club and he is a great player. It was a good decision to give him the number seven."

Owen was signed on a free transfer by the Premier League champions after his contract with relegated Newcastle expired at the end of last season.

Aston Villa have signed England winger Stewart Downing on a four-year deal from Middlesbrough for £12m.

The 24-year-old agreed personal terms and passed a medical at Villa Park on Thursday and becomes manager Martin O'Neill's first signing of the summer.

Downing told the Villa website: "I wanted to come as soon as I met Martin so I'm delighted it's now sorted out.

"As an outsider looking in, it was obvious Villa are a club on the up. I want to be part of that."

He made 181 League appearances for his home-town club after making his debut in 2002.

Downing injured his foot, ironically against Villa, in the last game of the season. He had an operation and is likely to be out of action until October at the earliest.

His future at Boro had been the subject of much speculation since the club's relegation to the Championship in May.

He signed a new five-year deal in February 2008 but had a written transfer request rejected in January, although chairman Steve Gibson he said he would not stand in the way of a move if the club went down.

He's right, Owen is a good player, he'll definitely learn more and get advantages from this.

Arsenal set to bid for Klaas-Jan Huntelaar but face competition from Manchester United

Arsenal are reported to be preparing an £18 million offer to bring Dutch star Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to the Emirates as a potential replacement for Emmanuel Adebayor.

Should the Togolese player go through with a speculated move to Barcelona the Huntelaar deal would bring £12 million into Arsenal's transfer kitty.

The deal would make sense given Arsene Wenger's recent comments regarding the state of finances at Arsenal. With annual repayments on the Emirates mortgage standing at £24 million Wenger has said: "The strategy of the club is to sell every year and buy less expensive players."

Having to sell-on their expensive stars such as Adebayor in order to meet these repayments means Wenger will depend very much on the quality of the club's young players.

These plans in mind Huntelaar would fit in with Wenger's vision. He has scored 70 goals in 82 games for current club Ajax and seven times in 12 appearances for his country.

A Dutch insider told the News of the World: "Arsenal are keen on Huntelaar and he has confirmed he would be keen to discuss a move.

"Klass-Jan is an out-and-out goalscorer - just the sort Arsenal have needed for many seasons. He might not have the silky skills you associate with a Wenger team but he has an amazing knack for putting the ball in the net."

However, Arsenal best be prepared for some competition to land the 24-year-old after he claimed that Manchester United are keen to bring him to Old Trafford.

Having rejected a contract to stay with Ajax huntelaar said: "I love clubs with great history like Ajax, I also love Manchester United.

"It's a club that makes me dream, especially as Ruud van Nistelrooy played there and did great things with them.

"I know certain English clubs are following me, like Manchester United - who are very interested in me."

They need to hurry up and make an offer..

andyman 17-07-2009 02:07 AM

So Arsenal are selling?

King Gizzard 17-07-2009 03:37 AM
