I think it's pretty safe to say it is Emma in the car. If she's worked out who killed Lucy two months before we're supposed to find out then my guess is that the killer does something to her brakes.
My own guess is that Abi is the killer and she gets Ben to fiddle with the car.

If Ross agrees to come back it will probably only be for one episode. He will probably come back with peggy for the one episode she is back for in February :)
