Michael Owen marked his first appearance in a Manchester United shirt with an 84th-minute winner in a 3-2 victory over a Malaysia XI.

Owen, who came on as a second-half substitute, reacted smartly to slot home a loose ball after Zoran Tosic had been upended in the penalty area.

A predatory Wayne Rooney strike opened the scoring before Nani's composed finish doubled United's advantage.

A Mohammed Amri Yahyah brace then gave the hosts hope before Owen pounced.

Owen, who also scored on his Liverpool debut as a 17-year-old, sent a miscued volley bobbling harmlessly across the face of the goal before finding the net in trademark fashion.

606: DEBATE
At Man Utd, a team where they will create chances, he will score

-toon-fan-pete-

In a United side shorn of summer departures Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez, Rooney was the man of the match, scoring the opener, setting up the second and going close several times.

Almost 100,000 fans packed the Bukit Jalil Stadium to watch the famous visitors and the attendance will have strengthened the case for United staying in Kuala Lumpur as they rearrange their pre-season itinerary.

Friday's bomb attacks in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta caused the cancellation of the team's visit to the country for the second match of their Far East tour.

The Football Federation of Australia offered to arrange a game on Monday, but United declined the invitation. The extra travel would have meant a nine-hour flight to Sydney and then an 11-hour trip to Seoul, where United are set to play on Friday.

The options of flying the Indonesian Select side they were supposed to be playing on Monday to Kuala Lumpur or taking on the other half of the Malaysian squad are being weighed up.

The team head back to Europe straight after a game in China next Sunday.

Wigan have completed the signing of Jason Scotland from Swansea for £2m.

The transfer had been agreed last week but the striker has now received the necessary international clearance.

The 30-year-old, who has been given a two-year deal, told Wigan's website: "It's great to get to play in the Premier League. It's a big step up.

"Hopefully I can take it in my stride and do well. Just thinking about lining up against some of the best players in the world makes me smile."

Scotland will be reunited with former Swansea manager Roberto Martinez at the JJB Stadium, the Spaniard having taking the vacant Wigan post following Steve Bruce's departure to Sunderland.

During two successful seasons at Swansea, Scotland scored 53 goals from 91 starts and was part of Martinez's squad that secured promotion to the Championship in 2008. Burnley had an estimated £1.25m bid rejected for Scotland but Wigan were always favourites to sign the Trinidad and Tobago international once Martinez expressed an interest.

"Me and the gaffer were together at Swansea City for two seasons and it's exciting to be able to team up again here," added Scotland.

Adebayor nears City switch

Arsenal, 13:48, July 18, 2009

Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor has arrived in Manchester to tie up the loose ends of his proposed move to Manchester City.
The 25-year-old will cost City around £25million where he will join Carlos Tevez, Robinho and Roque Santa Cruz in a new look City frontline.

The Togo international had stalled over a move to City but it now seems as if he is set to seal a move to Eastlands where he will earn a reported £150,000 a week.

Adebayor is expected to join Mark Hughes' side in the next few days as City continue a big spending summer.

Apparently Arsenal havent put an offer in for Chamakh (thank god) or huntelaar (dissapointment).

Real Madrid insist no Spurs, Arsenal offers for Huntelaar
18.07.09 | tribalfootball.com

Real Madrid insist there's been no offers from Arsenal or Tottenham for striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

"Only one formal offer exists and that is Stuttgart's," stated Real GM Jorge Valdano to the Spanish media.

Meanwhile, Stuttgart coach Markus Babbel says he is happy to wait for Huntelaar to make a decision regarding a move to the Bundesliga.

Babbel said: "The important thing is that I know that we are working on a transfer, and not only that of Huntelaar, but also alternatives.

"He is a player that we really like, now it is down to him. But whether that is tomorrow or next week, that's not so important."

Jayson 18-07-2009 02:10 PM

We need to offer for Huntelaar soon

Novo 18-07-2009 02:10 PM

Huntelaar needs to come to england

Moyes should have words with him

:eureka:

30stone 18-07-2009 02:16 PM

Id definately offer Money for Huntelaar over Chamakh.

Proven goal scorer.
better than 1 goal in 2 games.
Chamkah is like 1 in 4.

Chamakh will cost around 12m i reckon.

We will need like 23 for Huntelaar either way hes an out and out scorer.

And Moyes cant afford 20m

Unless he lets lescott go. and probs someone else. And Huntelaar would want champs league football to.

Jayson 18-07-2009 02:17 PM

I still giggling at Squire/R2W.

I mean at least when I made multi's I had the brains not to have an avatar exactly the same as my other one

Novo 18-07-2009 02:19 PM

Everton only have 15 MIL to spend but we always find Gems

Arteta
Cahill
Jagielka
Lescott
Pienaar

I just wanted to provide a quick update on some transfer news that makes slightly less headlines than Ade’s imminent exit.

Firstly there is the news that Veljko Batrovic has been offered a trial at Arsenal. At the age of 15, this diminutive forward has already drawn comparisons to Lionel Messi for his style of play. Having become the youngest ever captain of Bubamara’s youth side Batrovic has attracted interest from all over Europe leading to Steve Rowley to personally scout the player in March. Nothing has been finalised yet, but Arsenal have consistently shown their ambition in adding to the quality of their academy, often outbidding their rivals so a deal could be concluded soon.

The academy looks certain to have its striking options bolstered amid reports that Fluminese striker Wellington will complete a move to Arsenal this summer. Recently elevated to the Fluminese first team, this pacey forward is highly regarded. The youngster impressed on a 7-day trial with the club over Christmas, scoring 4 in 45 minutes in a game against Norwich U-16’s. Following Wellington’s arrival in London for talks it is now thought that a deal is imminent.

Another young forward to be linked with a move to Arsenal recently is Frank Nouble. Ivorian born Nouble has been called up by England U-17’s and has just turned down professional terms at Chelsea after admitting that his opportunities to break into the first team will be hampered by the depth of their squad. Comfortable on the left wing as well as more advanced roles, Nouble could be a powerful addition to the club.

One player who has signed for Arsenal is 15-year-old Jamie Edge. The youngster plays in central roles of either midfield or defence and has joined from Cheltenham after a trial at Manchester United saw him opt to join Arsenal. Edge joins goalkeeper Sean Mcdermott and centre back Martin Angha-Lötscher in signing this summer. A number of players have already left the club in search for pastures new. These include Rui Fonte, Amaury Bischoff and Vincent Van Den Berg.
