Reds announce sponsorship deal
Largest commercial contract in club's history to begin in July Liverpool aim to develop their 'global ambitions' after announcing their biggest commercial deal following the agreement of a new sponsorship with Standard Chartered Bank. The Reds have settled on a four-year contract with the bank, who will become the Anfield outfit's main sponsor and will replace Carlsberg from next July. Liverpool hope the deal will help to build their status around the world, and the Premier League club's managing director Christian Purslow believes it is a sign of progress. Purslow said: "This partnership brings together two highly successful organisations with a really strong cultural and strategic fit. "The sponsorship opportunity attracted a huge level of interest from a wide array of globally recognised brands and in Standard Chartered we believe we have the ideal partner to move forward and help develop our global ambitions for the club. "It is a real sign of the progress we have made at Liverpool that we have been able to secure the largest ever commercial deal in our history." |
Barcelona priced out of moves for Fabregas and Mascherano, but they insist deals are not dead
Bareclona have claimed only the transfer inflation caused by Real Madrid's mad spending spree stopped them buying Javier Mascherano and Cesc Fabregas this summer. But director of football Txiki Begiristain claimed the pursuit of the two midfielders is "something the club has left for later". Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has insisted Mascherano is not for sale, following the departure of Xabi Alonso to Madrid for £30million as part of the Bernabeu club's £200m recruitment drive. Fabregas, meanwhile, who is under contract at the Emirates Stadium until 2013, has repeatedly stated his loyalty to Arsenal. Barcelona made only one major summer signing, with the arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic in a swap deal for Samuel Eto'o. But the reigning European champions are clearly still intent on luring one or both of Mascherano or Fabregas to Catalonia - and look set to continue to their public wooing even with the transfer window now closed. Begiristain added: "Mascherano and Cesc did not come because of financial difficulties. It was impossible to pay the kind of money asked for after the spending of Real Madrid." I can't see Wenger letting Cesc go for less than 40. And Benitez will price Javier as high as possible because thats what he always does. |

Everton have confirmed that captain Phil Neville damaged knee ligaments in Sunday's Premier League match at Fulham and may face "a lengthy lay-off".
The 32-year-old midfielder was hurt in a challenge with Fulham's Dickson Etuhu during the Toffees' 2-1 defeat. Everton physio Mick Rathbone confirmed on the club's website that an MRI scan had revealed the extent of the injury. "It's too early to estimate length of absence but I fear he certainly faces a lengthy lay-off," added Rathbone. The versatile England international will rest for 48 hours to decrease the swelling on his knee before seeing a specialist in London. |
