Aston Villa are planning a £12 million bid for West Ham United defender Matthew Upson.

Skysports.com says Upton Park Gianfranco Zola has insisted he does not have to sell players, but bids approaching £15m would be difficult to turn down for the ambitious centre-half.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill was concerned by his side's 2-0 opening day defeat by Wigan and is in the market for defensive reinforcements after losing Martin Laursen and Zat Knight this summer. Villa were interested in Upson earlier this summer and have now made their move.

Johann 20-08-2009 06:03 AM

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is planning a move for Celtic wing wizard Aiden McGeady.

The Scottish Sun says Redknapp is set to make Celtic a bumper offer for McGeady - and NOT Scott Brown.

Redknapp and his No2 Kevin Bond headed north on Tuesday to run the rule over £10million target Brown at Parkhead.

But they left purring over the performance of McGeady in the 2-0 Champions League qualifying defeat by Arsenal.

It's understood the Spurs chief is weighing up a £5m-plus bid for McGeady, 23.

Jayson 20-08-2009 08:17 AM

- Vermaelen Praises Gallas: “He is very experienced. For me it’s much easier to play in a side with him because of that. I have already learned a lot from him. I have enjoyed the last two games a lot. I feel very pleased and we have a good team with good quality and I like the players. I’m settling in very well I think.”

- Bendtner signs a new deal with Arsenal, 50k a week, and has signed until 2014.

- West ham ready to look ready to sign Arsenal target Chamakh, 6m + 1m for each year he stays and a 20% of any future sale.

- Arsenal and Liverpool look to battle for Van Der Vaart Signing: Arsenal and Liverpool and both trying to capture Real Madrid midfielder Raphael van der Vaart. The Holland international has been demoted to the status of fringe player at the Bernabeu following the intense summer spending spree at the Spanish club and that has alerted the Premier League big guns.

- Everton look ready to snap up Spartak Moscow winger Vladimir Bystrov. The £9m man could be joined by Valencia’s Argentine midfielder Ever Banega.

- Arsenal has appointed three new senior executives to help run the Premier League club, including a former vice president of NBA Asia.
Tom Fox joins as chief commercial director of the north London club, which counts Stan Kroenke -- the owner of the NBA's Denver Nuggets -- as its largest shareholder.
Fox is also a former executive with Nike and Gatorade and will report to chief executive Ivan Gazidis, who joined Arsenal in January after a stint as deputy commissioner of the United States' Major League Soccer.

- Barcelona coach Guardiola insists no move for Man Utd's Vidic

- Aston Villa target Sylvain Distin but rule out bid for Matt Upson. SYLVAIN Distin remains top of Martin O’Neill’s defensive wish-list after Villa distanced themselves from reports of a £12 million bid for West Ham defender Matt Upson.

King Gizzard 20-08-2009 12:40 PM

Well then martin oneill is a total prick

villa need to win tonight or this will be the worst day ever.

30stone 20-08-2009 12:55 PM

Yes they do and
Upson > Distin

Upson is a year younger, a genuinely more talented player and is english.

Don't see why o neil would want distin, maybe because he could get him cheaper..

Lauren 20-08-2009 12:56 PM

I think I prefer Distin to be fair, but both are a good talent.
