'World-class' De Gea praised

Quote:

Robin van Persie's goals may have grabbed the headlines in Wednesday's Champions League victory over Olympiacos, but Phil Jones believes the label of match-winner should go to David De Gea.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...0,104,1440,914

Sandwiched between two of van Persie's three goals was an incredible double save from United's no.1. After blocking David Fuster's powerful header, De Gea recovered immediately and, at full-stretch, prevented Alejandro Dominguez's follow-up shot creeping inside the post.

Jones praised van Persie and De Gea after the 3-2 aggregate win that booked United's spot in the quarter-finals, but reserved special words for the man between the posts.

"He's world-class," Jones told ManUtd.com and BBC Radio. "He's up there with the best goalkeepers in the world. He can produce saves like that at critical moments in a match even when he's not really had much to do. He's alive to everything and won us the game."

De Gea was named Man of the Match by fans on United's official Twitter feed @ManUtd and was delighted with his performance and thankful for the support of the fans both at Old Trafford and beyond.

"The atmosphere inside the stadium was very impressive. It was a very important win for us that will boost our confidence," he told us. "I was very pleased with all the saves and happy I was able to help the team. I'd like to thank the fans for their support and for always being there. They are amazing."

Well said Phil Jones:), nice words for the awesome DDG!

Reds marvel at evergreen Giggs

Quote:

Ryan Giggs received a glowing tribute from his Manchester United team-mates after producing an instrumental 90-minute display in the 3-0 win over Olympiacos on Wednesday night.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...0,88,1280,1041

Almost a month after his last Reds outing and on his 150th Champions League appearance, Giggs had a hand in the first two goals at Old Trafford and was as fit as any other player on the pitch.

It led to manager David Moyes labelling him a "freak" after the game, while his team-mates were left shaking their heads in continued admiration.

"What's left to say about him?" said Michael Carrick. "It's incredible to come into a game like that, having not played a lot of football recently, and get through it physically – it shows how he looks after himself. His ball for Wayne [Rooney] for the second goal was typical of him. He can still do it and it's a pleasure to play with him."

Phil Jones added: "He's terrific. He drives the team forward and the ball for the penalty was exquisite. You can't teach that. He's a great lad as well."

And Patrice Evra said: "The legend, Ryan Giggs... I don't know how many words you can say about his class. I have so much respect for him. He's such an example to me. When I joined this club, a lot of people were talking about Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney but Ryan was always my favourite, along with Scholesy and Gary Neville."

Carrick was pleased with the comeback victory over Olympiacos, which came only three days after the disappointing league defeat at home to Liverpool.

"It's a good feeling," he said. "We knew it was possible before the game; we were quite positive and knew we were capable of a performance and a result like that, even after the weekend. We were very down for a couple of days after Liverpool but, at the same time, we knew we had enough to pull it off, so we're happy."

Giggsy is a legend, he was class last night.

Evra: We'll take on anyone

Quote:

Manchester United don’t fear any potential Champions League quarter-final opponents, according to defender Patrice Evra.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...=0,89,1280,567

Although other big-hitting European clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich all remain in the draw, which will take place on Friday at 11:00 GMT, Evra says the Reds can be a match for anyone.

“It’s a tough competition but I think we showed Manchester United is still alive, even though we lost a few days ago against Liverpool,” he told MUTV.

“We have fought back. Now, let’s see. We’ll take any team. When we play with that spirit we can do something big."

Evra spoke passionately on Tuesday at UEFA’s pre-match press conference about the need to perform well against Olympiacos and do justice to the club’s proud traditions.

He invoked similar sentiments following the Reds’ 3-0 win on Wednesday and United’s progression to the competition’s last eight.

“It was really important to show the love for this shirt, the respect for this shirt,” he said.

“That’s why I think we won – the spirit. Maybe some people will say I’m too old-school but I know when you have the Manchester United spirit you can make a difference and nothing is impossible.

“When you lose against a rival like Liverpool 3-0 at home and the fans still sing for you – they never booed – it’s amazing.

"When I went home on Sunday I was so sad, so hurt inside. I couldn’t wait for the [Olympiacos] game to give something back.

“We’ve had a tough season and the supporters have been fantastic. I say thank you to all the Manchester United fans. For me, they are the best in the world.”

Robin van Persie netted all three of United's goals in Wednesday's win but Evra insists the team – not just the Dutchman – deserve the accolades.

"I remember that night when we won the league last season, against Aston Villa, Robin scored a hat-trick then as well. Big players step up on big nights. But the star tonight was the team – not just one player."
I love Paddy's interviews!

Jones: Reds must kick on

Quote:

Phil Jones says Manchester United must use Wednesday’s impressive win over Olympiacos as a springboard for a successful end to the season.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...=0,35,1764,693

The Reds went into the Champions League last 16 second leg knowing at least two goals were needed to be in with a chance of qualifying for the last eight. United went one better thanks to Robin van Persie’s hat-trick, which, coupled with a clean sheet, ensured progression to the next round.

Attention now turns back to the Barclays Premier League with a trip to West Ham on Saturday and a derby clash with Manchester City three days later at Old Trafford. And Jones insists it’s vital the Reds carry the good form shown against the Greeks into the next two games in particular.

“We have to use this as a springboard to bounce on,” he told ManUtd.com and BBC Radio. “We can’t drag our heels [in the league] and think about the next round [in the Champions League]. We have to prepare right for the next game, against West Ham, and go and get a result.

“It was a terrific night [against Olympiacos] and nice to be on the winning side. We were long overdue a performance like that and we pulled it out of the bag when it was needed.”

Asked whether or not the team would prioritise the Champions League given the sizeable gap between United and the top four in the league, Jones added: “I think we have to but we also have to prove ourselves and show what we’re capable of in the league as well. They’re all big games and we have to go to West Ham and win. That’s our focus now.”

De Gea keen to repay fans

Quote:

David De Gea admits Manchester United were unfortunate to be paired with holders Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals but says he and his team-mates are determined to repay United fans for their continued support.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...0,209,1787,873

Bayern Munich are the bookies’ favourites to win the tournament again this year and secured their place in the last eight with a 3-1 aggregate win over Arsenal. Domestically, they are currently on a 50-game unbeaten run, well clear at the top of the Bundesliga and are still on course to repeat last season’s Treble heroics.

De Gea, who won the fan-voted Man of the Match award for his performance in United’s second-leg victory against Olympiacos on Wednesday, says beating Bayern will be a tough task but not one that’s beyond the Reds.

“You’ve got to be honest and say we haven’t been too fortunate in the draw,” he told ManUtd.com. “I suppose everyone would agree that they are probably the strongest outfit left in the tournament.

“But we knew that was always going to be possible. You’re always going to get a tough team at this stage of the competition, but the main thing is that we go into these games with confidence.

“We face them here and away from home with confidence. We’ll fight really, really hard and really go for it. That’s what we’ve got to do. One team’s got to win.”

United’s fans played a big part in helping the Reds overturn a 2-0 deficit in the last 16, according to De Gea, and the Spanish stopper is keen to repay the supporters’ faith when Bayern come to town.

“The fans were great the other night against Olympiacos,” he said. “We always know that on big Champions League nights they are with us and that strength we drew from their support and that push they gave us was very, very important.

“We know it will be the same against Bayern Munich – they will be there for us. That support that we get is vital.

“When the stadium is full and you hear the crowd singing your name it’s a lovely feeling and it’s something you’re really grateful for and thankful for. We’ll be really pleased if we can repay that support. That would be great.”

DDG is awesome:):amazed::worship:.

Boss excited by Bayern tie

Quote:

Manchester United manager David Moyes is looking forward to the Champions League quarter-final ties against Bayern Munich.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...0,143,1600,739

Although he conceded that the draw is a tough one, the Reds boss is relishing being in the last eight of Europe's premier competition after the remarkable win against Olympiacos in midweek.

"I was thrilled that we were in that draw and we're in the quarter-finals of the Champions League," Moyes stated at Friday's press conference ahead of the weekend trip to West Ham.

"When we were 2-0 down to Olympiacos a week or so ago, I don't think a lot of people were putting us through to the quarter-final draw. So, in a lot of ways, it didn't matter who I drew.

"But I've got to say we've drawn out the favourites and obviously the holders of the cup competition as well, so it's a really tough draw for us but one that I'm looking forward to."

The manager was asked about his thoughts on having the home leg against Bayern first on 1 April.

"I think if you're old fashioned, you'd say you always want to be at home in the second leg," he explained. "I've got to say that would be the preference. But the way the game's going now with counter-attacking football and a different approach by teams away from home, we've got it and that's the way the draw came out. We're at home in the first leg and away in the second leg, we just have to take it."

Moyes also had a message for those who queried his limited experience of top-level European football when he took on the job of replacing Sir Alex Ferguson.

Nearly everyone asked me at the start of the season about my inexperience in the Champions League," he recalled. "I was amazed that none of you asked me about that the other night there, it must have slipped your minds.

"Look, I said before, I'd watched enough Champions League football and hopefully watched so much that I know a bit about it. But I got a lot of help from people around me, I said I would do that. Thankfully, I've got myself to the quarter-final but the aim now is to get to the semi-final."

Van Persie ruled out

Quote:

Manchester United manager David Moyes has ruled Robin van Persie out of Saturday's Barclays Premier League encounter with West Ham at Upton Park.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...,461,1800,1475

Van Persie suffered a knee injury in the 90th minute of Wednesday's 3-0 win over Olympiacos at Old Trafford, forcing him to leave the field on a stretcher and without the match ball that his preceding hat-trick had earned.

Although the boss has already described the blow as "not serious", he will not risk taking the Dutchman to East London for a difficult game against Sam Allardyce's Hammers.

"We're getting Robin re-scanned again today," Moyes told reporters at the Aon Training Complex on Friday. "We're not quite conclusive on everything we've seen yet so we want to just check that out and be sure. He won't be available for tomorrow's game, but we'll try to give you some update when we can on the outcome of it.

"We've got a lot of games coming up, we need to make sure that the squad's ready for all the games. That's big for us, that we have all our players fit and available.

"I think Big Sam has just won Manager of the Month. I don't know if that was his curse last week [losing 3-1 to Stoke City] or if it's still to come this week. But he's done great. They were at a lower league position and he's turned them around."

bbfan1991 21-03-2014 05:01 PM

Gutted about RVP:(, hope he is OK and has a speedy recovery.

It is a blow for United, but a positive is that Juan Mata will finally get a chance to play in his favoured CAM role and I'm looking forward to seeing him link up with Wayne Rooney more.

Possibly more game time for Kagawa/Hernandez too? Welbeck will obviously get games also as he is ahead in the pecking order than those two.

Carrick at CB and Buttner at LB? Gulps:o.

bbfan1991 22-03-2014 06:57 PM

Happy with that win, solid team performance by the lads. Shinji Kagawa and Juan Mata's link up and interchanging was class, they both seem to enjoy playing with Wayne Rooney too and all three have hard work, creativity and intelligence on the pitch!

WOW Wazza's first goal, the technique and quality was sublime to even attempt it from there and he had to be quick in terms of looking to see where the GK was. I would say it is better than David Beckham's was, it was fitting that Becks was there today to see that goal.

Special mentions to Carrick and Fellaini too. I must admit I was worried when I saw that Michael Carrick was going to play at CB, but he was very solid and in MF Fellaini was getting stuck in with the challenges, interceptions and tried to create chances and tracked back also.

The last two results have given the team and Manager more confidence and morale, but we do have City next now...

Rooney revels in victory

Quote:

Wayne Rooney described last weekend's 3-0 defeat to Liverpool as one of the worst days in his professional career, but he scored twice against West Ham – his first a stunning 60-yard strike – to ensure the Reds got back to winning ways in the league at Upton Park.

http://www.manutd.com/sitecore/shell...,141,2644,1621

Rooney, who joked that his first goal was even better than David Beckham’s halfway line hit in 1996 against Wimbledon. Beckham was in the crowd at Upton Park to witness Rooney’s strike as the Reds recorded a third consecutive away league win.

“Today was a good result after last week [against Liverpool],” said Rooney. “I think the win on Wednesday against Olympiacos has given us all a big lift and you could see today the confidence running through the team. It was a good victory and I'm really pleased with that.

“I think the Olympiacos result was massive for us in terms of picking the fans up, picking ourselves up after the defeat to Liverpool. Today we played some lovely football, although I'm a bit disappointed that we didn't take one or two other chances to make the game easier for ourselves.

“Overall we played some good stuff. I thought we defended really well. I thought Michael Carrick at the back, in a difficult game, was outstanding for us so there are a lot of positives for us.

“We played great as a team and I thought there was some great counter-attacking football from us. That's in the DNA of Manchester United and today we did that, particularly in the first half. We caused them a lot of problems and could have scored more.”

Of his goal, Rooney said: “It was just instinct. I've turned and I've had a quick look and seen the goalkeeper off his line. It's one of those that I've tried many times and thankfully today it's gone in and I was delighted with that.”

Asked if it was better than Beckham’s strike, he joked: “Of course it was! It's up there [with my best goals]. I wouldn't say it's my favourite. The goals we mentioned before [against Newcastle and City] are goals that you try in training and games and it's not often they come off and when they do it's great.”

Next up for the Reds on Tuesday is Manchester City’s visit to Old Trafford. But after two wins on the trot United go into the game with confidence. “It's a massive game,” Rooney told Sky Sports. “It’s a big game for City too, for the fans and for the players. It's a big challenge for us and we have to go into that with confidence after the last two games. I'm looking forward to it, I'm excited, and hopefully we can get a good result.”

Ole's response in this video is brilliant when asked if he sees Liverpool as title contenders.
