Updating for the new page. Think this just leaves Amy Jade, Daniel, Black Dagger, Nicky91, Tony Montana, Smithy and Babayaro.

Right then, I'm on the verge of falling asleep and already starting to hallucinate so here're the results. 23 took part in Top Answers this time, whilst 20 did Pointless.

I'll post the Pointless scores, and the mid-way league tables, tomorrow, or "today" lol, I am literally nodding off

To tide you over, here's Round 6 to get thinking on.

1. Name a documentary or series presented by Sir David Attenborough
2. Name an element on the periodic table whose symbol is a single letter
3. Name a type of renewable energy
4. Name a moon that is in our solar system (other than Earth's moon)
5. Name a winner/laureate of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry
6. Name a species of animal that has suffered at the hands of poachers
7. Name a species of bird that is native to the UK
8. Name a country severely impacted by the Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004
9. Name a poisonous type of mushroom
10. Name one of the body's five senses

For the Pointless edition: For #2, there are fourteen correct answers and they have one letter for their chemical symbol. Please name both the element AND the symbol. For #7, they must appear in the wild. For #8, I am considering countries that took physical damage only. Plenty of countries lost tourists to the disaster, but I am only accepting answers that were in the Pacific/Indian Ocean. For #10, the five senses are pretty obvious and there's no sneaky "ESP" or whatever to try and suggest :p

All of the other questions are pretty open to interpretation unless you go completely off the rails and start naming moons from solar systems other than our own :spin2:

Babayaro. 29-08-2020 03:45 AM

ffs I originally had Spanish but opted for Mandarin bc its literally the most common language :s

Tony Montana 29-08-2020 04:06 AM

Ah **** I forgot to do this round. :bawling:

Good luck y'all.

Ammi 29-08-2020 04:28 AM

...well done Cald......and Daniel and Denver as well coming right up behind you.....

Shaun 29-08-2020 04:34 AM

**** it, I'm having a second wind and I'll just storm through now. As mentioned above, 20 sets of answers means that an incorrect one would be worth 20... if there are any!

Pointless

1) Name a US state that begins with a vowel

Shaun - Indiana
Niamh - Oregon
Rob! - Idaho
Calderyon - Utah
Denver - Ohio
Strictly Jake - Illinois
Cal - Illinois
Mitchell - Idaho
Cherie - Arkansas
MB - Oregon
MTVN - Indiana
Matthew. - Iowa
Ammi - Arizona

Liam- - Illinois
Jake - Utah
Jessica - Oregon
AnnieK - Oregon
Babayaro - Indiana
Smithy - Utah
Black Dagger - Arkansas

There were 12 potential answers here, and nobody said Oklahoma or Alabama. As a result, many points lingering. Oregon scores 3, Utah, Illinois and Indiana score 2. Arkansas and Idaho score just 1.

2) Name a colour on the flag of South Africa

Shaun - Black
Niamh - Black
Rob! - White
Calderyon - White
Denver - Green
Strictly Jake - White
Cal - Red
Mitchell - Green
Cherie - Red
MB - Gold
MTVN - White
Matthew. - Gold
Ammi - Green
Liam- - Blue
Jake - White
Jessica - Gold
AnnieK - White
Babayaro - Blue
Smithy - Gold
Black Dagger - Red

With only six options it seemed inevitable there'd be no pointless answer, although Liam- did look like he'd sneak it with blue before Marc came along. Blue, Red and Black just share 1pt, Gold and Green share 2, whilst White picks up a hefty 5.

3) Name a country that borders Brazil

Shaun - Colombia
Niamh - Peru
Rob! - Guyana
Calderyon - Suriname
Denver - France
Strictly Jake - Suriname
Cal - Paraguay
Mitchell - Uruguay
Cherie - Colombia
MB - Bolivia
MTVN - Suriname
Matthew. - Bolivia
Ammi - Argentina
Liam- - Uruguay
Jake - Peru
Jessica - Uruguay
AnnieK - France
Babayaro - Paraguay
Smithy - Guyana
Black Dagger - Suriname

Ten potential answers and it seems the revelation that Brazil shares a border with France was too curious an observation to resist here, scoring 1pt along with Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Bolivia and Colombia. Not as bad as Uruguay, with 2pts, or Suriname, with 3pts, though! Venezuela passes by as an unused pointless answer.

4) Name a capital city of the world that begins with the letter A

Shaun - Accra
Niamh - Alofi
Rob! - Ashgabat
Calderyon - Ashgabat
Denver - Ashgabat
Strictly Jake - Andorra la Vella
Cal - Apia
Mitchell - Athens
Cherie - Andorra la Vella
MB - Ashgabat
MTVN - Antananarivo
Matthew. - Antananarivo
Ammi - Amsterdam
Liam- - Apia
Jake - Athens
Jessica - Algiers
AnnieK - Asuncion
Babayaro - Asuncion
Smithy - Athens
Black Dagger - Athens

I agonised over which letter to use for this question because the letters L, P, R, B etc. gave off too obvious answers for Top Answers and I felt this one would split the room quite interestingly in both games. It did! Sorry Niamh, but I've only just checked that Alofi is the capital of Niue which isn't an independent country and is classed as a part of New Zealand :( Some other big scores here: Athens gets 3pts, as does Ashgabat. Apia, Andorra la Vella and Asuncion only get 1pt. Unused pointless answers here were Amman, Addis Ababa, Abuja, Asmara and Ankara.

I'm up for putting the incorrect answer to TiBB here since it's a tricky area; Niue is a "self governing nation in free association with New Zealand" but... technically isn't an independent country recognised by the UN

5) Name a river other than the Thames, Amazon or Nile

Shaun - Dart (UK)
Niamh - Lee (Ireland)
Rob! - Witham (UK)
Calderyon - Tornionjoki (Scandinavia)
Denver - Žeimena (Lithuania)
Strictly Jake - Yarlong Tsangpo (China)
Cal - Minho (Iberia)
Mitchell - Ishim (Russia/Kazakhstan)
Cherie - Guadalmedina (Spain)
MB - Hunza (Pakistan)
MTVN - Kuakanjoki (Finland)
Matthew. - Don (UK)
Ammi - Mississippi (USA)
Liam- - Onyx (Antarctica)
Jake - Cray (UK)
Jessica - Nenagh (Ireland)
AnnieK - Orinoco (Venezuela/Colombia)
Babayaro - Oise (Belgium/France)
Smithy - Vid Flumina (Saturn's moon)
Black Dagger - Sutlej (India/Pakistan)

Unsurprisingly, this was a completely pointless question!

6) Name a volcano other than Etna, Vesuvius or Krakatoa

Shaun - Kaena (Hawaii, USA)
Niamh - Rinjani (Indonesia)
Rob! - Mount Olympus (Mars)
Calderyon - Suwanosejima (Japan)
Denver - Mousa Ali (Ethiopia/Eritrea/Djibouti)
Strictly Jake - Pico de Fogo (Cabo Verde)
Cal - Piip (Russia)
Mitchell - Shishaldin (Alaska, USA)
Cherie - The Nut (Australia)
MB - Nabukelevu (Fiji)
MTVN - Villarrica (Chile)
Matthew. - Arenal (Costa Rica)
Ammi - Kilimanjaro (Tanzania)
Liam- - Rajabasa (Indonesia)
Jake - Taal (Philippines)
Jessica - El Chicon (Mexico)
AnnieK - Pacaya (Guatemala)
Babayaro - Shinmoedake (Japan)
Smithy - Sapas Mons (Venus)
Black Dagger - Paricutin (Mexico)

Once again, unless I'm missing something, a completely successful question for everyone.

7) Name a landlocked country

Shaun - Botswana
Niamh - Niger
Rob! - Rwanda
Calderyon - Luxembourg
Denver - Turkmenistan
Strictly Jake - Burundi

Cal - Laos
Mitchell - Mali
Cherie - Laos
MB - Moldova
MTVN - Liechtenstein

Matthew. - Laos
Ammi - Austria
Liam- - Botswana
Jake - Tajikistan
Jessica - Laos
AnnieK - Chad
Babayaro - Nepal

Smithy - Niger
Black Dagger - Switzerland

With 49 potential valid answers here, I was expecting fewer casualties. As it turned out, there was something enticing about Laos, as it scored 3pts. Niger and Botswana both score 1pt.

8) Name a city in Europe that isn't a capital city

Shaun - Kharkiv (Ukraine)
Niamh - Cork (Ireland)
Rob! - Lincoln (UK)
Calderyon - Lappeenranta (Finland)
Denver - Dubăsari (Moldova)
Strictly Jake - Lancaster (UK)
Cal - Obeliai (Lithuania)

Mitchell - Chelmsford (UK)
Cherie - Galway (Ireland)
MB - Radviliškis (Lithuania)
MTVN - Bangor (UK)
Matthew. - Inverness (UK)

Ammi - Manchester (UK)
Liam- - Velika Gorica (Croatia)
Jake - Chelmsford (UK)
Jessica - Aveiro (Portugal)
AnnieK - Manchester (UK)
Babayaro - Sochi (Russia)
Smithy - Poznań (Poland)

Black Dagger - Kharkiv (Ukraine)

Manchester I can understand being a popular answer. Chelmsford, maybe, if a couple of you live near there. But ****ing Kharkiv!? THANKS A LOT, LUCAS.

9) Name a language, other than English, that is commonly spoken in more than one country

Shaun - Maithili
Niamh - Persian
Rob! - Bengali
Calderyon - Portuguese
Denver - Bantu
Strictly Jake - Hausa
Cal - Malay

Mitchell - Portuguese
Cherie - Persian
MB - Kirundi
MTVN - Tswana
Matthew. - Gaelic
Ammi - French
Liam- - Albanian
Jake - Russian
Jessica - Arabic
AnnieK - Mandarin
Babayaro - Bhojpuri
Smithy - Klingon
Black Dagger - Greek

Not a great round for the P languages, aapparently.

10) Name a city that has hosted an Olympic Games (Winter or Summer) since 1896.

Shaun - Calgary (1988)
Niamh - Salt Lake City (2002)
Rob! - Salt Lake City (2002)
Calderyon - Helsinki (1952)
Denver - Sarajevo (1984)
Strictly Jake - Garmisch Partenkirchen (1936)
Cal - Cortina d'Ampezzo (1956)
Mitchell - Tokyo (1964, 2021)
Cherie - Squaw Valley (1960)

MB - Albertville (1992)
MTVN - Sapporo (1972)
Matthew. - Moscow (1980)
Ammi - Rio de Janeiro (2016)
Liam- - St. Moritz (1928, 1948)

Jake - Sarajevo (1984)
Jessica - Albertville (1992)
AnnieK - Munich (1972)
Babayaro - Sydney (2000)
Smithy - Chamonix (1924)
Black Dagger - Antwerp (1920)

Not too much damage here; only a point at worst

Scores

Ammi - 3
Babayaro - 5
Shaun - 6
Denver - 7
Matthew. - 7
Cal - 8
Cherie - 8
Jessica - 8
Niamh - 8/28

AnnieK - 11
