Racial identity is a matter of choice for the individual.

Niorin indentifies as being black. She decides, no one else.
rubbish
Not rubbish, Noirin sees herslef as black, she's claimed black identity numerous times.

No person can refuse another their personal sense of identity.

Tell me, why do you want to deny Noirin her identity, why do you want to project your own conceptions of what 'race' she is on to her. Why not accept her as she wants to be seen?

Why does it bother you?

If you can call her a 'Black woman' then I have entirely the same justification for calling her a White woman,

Why isn't she the 'First Irish Woman to appear on...,
and,
We are now categorizing people by race and documenting them as 'representatives'.
First chinese woman to appear on the cover of heat!
First pakistani man to appear on cover of Sports Weekly!
First white woman (half chinese) to appear on cover of 'Shaved Asians Weekly!'
So dumb!

She has done her roots and her family (father is a priest) proud ..... NOT!!

I think Halle Berry sums this up best

"Blackness is a state of mind and I identify with the black community. Mainly, because I realized, early on, when I walk into a room, people see a black woman, they don't see a white women. So out of that reason alone, I identify more with the black community."

you just dont get it eh?....its not about what YOU wanna 'call' her. Its about her own sense of identity. She CHOOSES to associate with her black identity.

Not only does black role models saying things like this serve to increase racism and segregation but...

Announcing her as the first black woman in Nuts does not help racism, just like going ape over Obama being the prez... it's 2009 and we still rave about this stuff... Why?

Well firstly because a lot of the UK population are racist. Secondly, because the media are needing headlines... this is how they make their money.

Yes, most of those who read nuts are racist, whether they know it or not, society breeds this behaviour... but please don't slag off nuts whilst you gain most of your news from tabloids.. this is just so stupid it is crazy.

In real life it doesn't effect anything at all.

I am black and the mixed raced freinds i have all say they are black like noirin. Noirin is mixed raced ie has black and white parents, that is something that cannot be genetically debated. The more pertinent question and one that is at the root of the debate we have is why she, and most mixed raced people deny their white identity and consider themselves to be black? The answer to this is the historical conception of the racist ideology that says if you have 1% non white blood (genes) makes you non white and thus cast from that group. The racist abuse suffered by mixed raced people and their clear rejection by the white community (that they have a claim to) has led to a situation where most (not all) mixed raced people identify themselves as black. Slighty over simplified but it is an explanation that is pertinent to black identity.

Firstly you say a lot of the UK population are racist then you say it doesn't affect anything in real life? I agree the emphasis on Obama's race was way way over the top but it is still an important point and whether you mention it a lot or not it's still going to be a major factor when people were deciding to vote for him. Obama being elected as a black president was a sign of how far the united states as a society has moved on. Just over 50 years ago a black woman faced prosectution for daring not to give her seat up for a white man. 50 years; that's nothing. And now a black man is president of the united states. Race has played a huge part in American history and to a lesser extent over here.

Being black and growing up in a mostly white neighbourhood isn't that easy. Noirin being on the cover might not be much but it might be the beginning of a change in attitudes.

ElProximo 05-08-2009 01:08 PM

Halle Barry is a good example of a sneaky idiot who will play race cards and yet sell-out another.
Halle Barry's black father abandoned her and her mother. Her white mother raised Halle Barry by herself, invested in her daughters career with massive money and time and effort and sacrifice and then risked it all for her daughters big shot at Hollywood.
Barry then shows up at an award and as the Americans say 'threw her Mum under the bus' and sucked up some stupid 'historic first' race-card stupidity.
Halle Barrys father was what.. proud of abandoning her and her mum?

Reminds me a lot of another American 'historic first' whos only 'black' anything was that his father - who abandoned him and his mother - happened to be Arab-Kenyan.
Later Obama who was raised by white people (who didn't abandon him) is happy to pretend to be African-American.
Like Barry he justifies it by saying that some people 'in a room' once misidentified them and so they can now misidentify themselves all they want.

Anyways.
I had actually suppose Noirin was just finding a way to 'sell out' black people by admitting she has shamefully posed for the cover of Nuts.
I'm sure real Black people are so proud to find out 'they' just did something so tasteless and whorish.
Black people everywhere trying to find out if there is a way to disown her or at least get her fined for that racial hate-crime.

Its late and Im on a lot of pills.
Kisses.

I wasn't very cohesive just sticking that sentence on the end there. Sorry.

:laugh3::laugh3::laugh3::laugh3:

I have a question for you.

When you see Halle Berry, what do you see a black or white woman?

Most white people would look at her weird, if she claimed to be white.

Just because her dad abandoned her, that does not take away from her black heritage.

Jayson 05-08-2009 01:17 PM

ElProximo will reply with an 86 line post based on bullshit.

I can't be asked to read his/her posts anymore. Bu-bye.

Her mother is Kenyan not her grandparent. As a white person, I would guess that she sees herself more as black because if she walked into a room it would be obvious straight away that she has atleast one black parent (if not 2) However you could not be 100% sure if any of her parents were white, therefore people probably have considered her black all her life
