JK spells it out

IT'S predicted to be the biggest-selling book of all time.

And today the News of the World has the first interview with author JK Rowling since Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince began flying off the shelves around the world at midnight on Friday.

JK, who has made £435million from her books about the schoolboy wizard, was quizzed by Owen Jones, 14, and told him how she yearned to be an unknown bashing out novels in a cafe—just like she used to be.

Owen, from Cardiff, beat thousands of youngsters around the world to the interview at Edinburgh Castle, which will be screened by ITV.

Here he shares snippets from his exclusive interview.

OWEN: Do you ever wish you could just sit in a cafe and watch the world as you used to?

JK: Yes, I do. What a fantastic thing Harry Potter has given me, but one of my regrets would be I will never again have the pleasure of sneaking into a cafe and diving into my world with no one knowing what I'm doing.

OWEN: If you could have just one thing from the Harry Potter books, what would it be?

JK: The invisibility cloak.

OWEN: What inspired you to write the first book and where were you?

JK: I had the idea on a train from Manchester to London in 1990.

OWEN: How do you keep track of your characters?

JK: That bit's in my head. I know where they all are.

OWEN: I read an interview in which you said the names of the Hogwarts houses were created on the back of an aeroplane sickbag.

JK: That's quite correct.

OWEN: Do you travel with pen and paper?

JK: Always. When I thought of the idea for Harry on that train journey, I didn't have a pen. I still wonder what I may have forgotten.

OWEN: Did you ever think the books would be such a global success?

JK: I never dreamed they would be.

OWEN: What tips would you give to someone hoping to write a series?

JK: It comes down to planning. I conceived Harry's story as a big whole then divided it into seven. It doesn't feel like a series, it feels like one novel.

OWEN: Why don't wizards help muggles with healing powers?

JK: Because they've been driven into hiding by our attitude to magic. They are bound by the statute of secrecy, as you know.

HARRY Potter At The Castle: The JK Rowling Interview is on today at 5.30pm on ITV1.

Finished it!!!!! Couldnt put it down once I got it - mind you I had pre-ordered in W H Smith and they tried to charge me full price. Nearly got my wand out and put a hex on them!!!

It is brilliant, I think it is my favourite. Great build up and ending making you want to have the last book. Recommended to anyone.
