I thought there was a nice mix of genres of music in the EMA's.
Almost all rock tho.
Green Day, Foo Fighters, Tokyo Hotel and U2 performed (In U2's case, twice).
But there was also live performances from Shakira, Beyonce, Katy Perry, and Jay Z.

They are on the alternative side I guess, but very well known if you watch certain channels and read certain magazines.

I think the highest charting song they had was Nancy Boy back in 97 which reached 4 both here and in the UK.
