Well I went with my mom and neither of us like Sci-fi but both of us loved it so I reckon Mrs. LT will love it too!

Leave your brain at home LT and you'll enjoy it immensely. Fantastic to look at.

I disagree so much with you! The story reminded me of a book I read a few years ago that I loved, The Celestine Prophecy, I found it very spiritual

Yes, that's the whole idea behind the manipulative storyline that incorporates elements of many older works of fiction but dumbs it down entirely to appeal to as many people as possible. There's no subtlety involved here - it's a blockbuster designed to make as much money as possible. I mean, I knew what was going to happen after the first few mins.... no balls.

It was the dumbest film I've seen in a long time. Visually spectacular but that's it. Somebody else will come along and utilise this new technology in a daring, wholly original manner that will highlight the true weaknesses of this film. Wait until somebody like Del Toro or Christopher Nolan get a hold of this form of movie making - then we'll have some real magic.

The message was- I'll rape the culture of many indigenous tribes of earth and mix it all up and put them in giant smurfs outfits, immersing them in some far off mystical land. Then I'll have a by-the-numbers plot that any 8 year old could come up with but that doesn't matter because, hey, they're the good guys and I have a really bad bad guy who wants to kill them - nobody will care about the idiotic plot cuz I'll be dazzling them with effects.

You see that's why I call Avatar manipulative. The whole idea behind District 9 was that the alien beings were unnattractive and "alien", not Blue tribal people that we immediately empathize with because of our own checkered history in relation to dealing with them on Earth. That's daring on the part of District 9 because it forces the viewer to think and reflect on how you see the world and those in it, whereas Avatar is just childish, exploitative filmmaking, designed to make as much money as possible.

But it seems to me, and this isn't meant in an insulting way, that you'd already decided that you wouldn't like it before you saw it because everyone else did and it had a big budget! Like I said I loved it and came away thinking about things alot and I find it insulting that you are basically saying that me and all the other people that liked it are basically stupid and easily manipulated.

I like the whole energy idea, I believe there's alot of truth in it and the film made me want to read a bit more about it, that can only be a good thing imo.

District 9 has all of that except for the happy, "oh everything is great" ending. It has a hopeful ending.
