To me the best way of bringing up a child is to leave him make his own desicions when he is capable, with something as life defining and major as religious belief. Nothing makes more sense than that. I can't believe you of all people are trivializing it to the point where your comparing religion to raising a child to follow a football team.

No, that was to illustrate how bankrupt your theory was about leaving bringing up children until they are old enough (whenever that would be) to make up their mind.

Your rather beleaguered view of how one would bring up a child in a Christian household needs to be filled out with some reality.

Don't put words in my mouth. Who do you think I am, a biblical character?

I never once said wait until a child is old enoough to bring one up. That makes absoloutely no sense. I was merely talking about one specific part of a childs upbringing - religious belief.

Whatever. The church needs it's faithful I suppose. And kids are easy.

Shame your shooting blanks.

Tom4784 02-03-2010 02:08 PM

I agree with Stu on this, I won't bring my kids up to be anything but open minded, if they want to choose religion or not it'd be upto them but I'll be supportive either way. Don't christians believe that God gave us free will in order to chose whether or not to follow him?

Yes and they also know that bringing up children is not brainwashing them. To be a Christian and not bring your child up a Christian would be a sin.

and where would they go anyway when you went to church?

lol

They were smart when they created that rule, weren't they.

Brainwashing is a method for systematically changing attitudes or altering beliefs. It's certainly a term I would apply to raising your child a Christian forcefully.

Many parents do force religion onto their children. Your ability to condescend and sneer at a valid point you know to be completely true is absoloutely astounding.

you are wrong

I like my short version to your self-congratulatory long one. mines is punchy.

Stu 02-03-2010 02:53 PM

I'm being called self congratulatory by TiBB's own self appointed voice of reason? Stick to the subject like a good man. Many parents force religion on to their children. This is a fact and it is not to be denied.

If it is a so called (Tibb) fact then demonstrate how that is so

Are you honestly trying to deny that many parents breath faith down childrens necks from a very young age? Of course it happens. Don't be so bloody stupid. I doubt there is a universal statistic for this, and no doubt even if there was you would scoff at it and quickly change the subject with your brilliantly abstract methods of point dodging.

I'm not saying all parents do this.

Can you prove that you have experienced 100% of all modern art and poetry to be able to say that 99% of it is crap? No, and nobody would expect you to be able to prove it. Now grow ^.

When i was a kid my family like all the families in our community used to attend church every Sunday, most of the kids found it boring and would sooner be anywhere else but there.

You can still see the same happening every sunday morning, kids sitting fidgetting in pews waiting to get out of church and back to being a kid.

PS. do you still consider rock and roll as the devils music?

Stu 02-03-2010 03:06 PM

I think it moved on to rap music somewhere around 1998.

Wildcat! 02-03-2010 03:14 PM

I believe in god, I am pretty religious. But I will always raise my kids. without any religious influences. My parents, were very much like that. They nevr forced me into believing anything. They always tried to just inform me of whats out there.
I think you have to let a person, just be.

I have, but \I dont! I am muslim.

And not raising them in any religion, means, I will let them choose who they want to be.
I have complete faith in my beliefs. As I am sure, anyone in the same situation. If my kids are gonna believe the same thigs I believe in, they will do so, because of their brain, and their reasoning. Not because they were forced to. There is nothing worse than that I think for a human being.
In this day and age, everything is scrutinized, and questioned. So your kids, should be prepared, and open minded.

But faith, for those who have it, governs all.

Yes like school, most kids would avoid school if they could simply because they want to go out and play, as they mature they start to become more interested in learning what schools have to offer. however give most kids the chance and they would prefer a lot more time off school than at school.

There is also a difference that education of one sort or another is compulsory in the UK.

What does the Muslim religion say about bringing up children in your faith?
