Saint Patrick's Day (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig) is a yearly holiday celebrated on 17 March. It is named after Saint Patrick (circa AD 387–461), the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland. It began as a purely Christian holiday and became an official feast day in the early 1600s. However, it has gradually become more of a secular celebration of Ireland's culture.

It is a public holiday on the island of Ireland; including Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. It is also widely celebrated by the Irish diaspora, especially in places such as Great Britain, Canada, the United States, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, and Montserrat, among others.

Anyone have any plans for tomorrow? I'm going up to O'Connell Street for the parade.

And England don't drink, or the rest of Europe for that matter?

We celebrate St Patrick because he introduced Catholicism into Ireland, which is the main religion! It is also a fun day out if you go to a parade. Nothing more for me tbh.

For me it's the parade. I can do without the religion.

Nah, you decided to have a dig at the Irish in a thread that's about celebrating being Irish. And I don't particular find that funny, sorry.

Patrick 16-03-2010 10:09 PM

Parades are so gimicky and annoying and crowded so its not really the best part.

Parades are over rated.

It's not a joke to me when an English person says it. Gets my blood up, I'm sorry.
