You don't have to have know science to know what guinea pig means in the the top post it's a phrase used in the news all the time tv and newspaper.

I'm pretty sure every other person reading this thread knew what it meant.

I wouldn't usually be so narky about it but it's the second time this month it's been explained to you man.

In fairness, I have not heard that term since BB5 and its seems it was BB3 and earlier,
and,
for whatever reason (maybe watching too many BBUSA seasons) I remember 'Hamsters'.
Same idea but I just don't recall 'Guinea Pig' as often.

It's been so long since I heard this term used for HMs (or noticed it) that I did initially take that as 'pets inside the house' before realizing you must be using an old skool BB reference to HMs. It even made me think of Chickens or dogs.

Maybe some people are still saying 'Guinea Pigs' referring to Housemates but.. do they still?
I just don't seem to hear it anymore?

Occasionally you will see BBUSA fans online using the term 'Hamsters' and suppose they must be hardcore viewers from way back when.

I'd put it his way - I don't think the kids today use that one anymore. This might make us feel old heh

Also, the launch is likely to of been moved forward a week, to the 10th of May.

C4 will be prepping the Holding Page this weekend. I pushed for when we would see the eye, when he just responded, "the next time we speak, you'll have seen the eye". However, according to a previous conversation, the eye was going to be released between the 1st and 10th, so it's likely we'll see the eye on Monday (the date I can order my iPad!!!!) along with those exclusive pictures of the BB funeral advert (NOT THE ADVERT ITSELF)

The house is finished, and guinea pigs are either in, or will be going in today or Monday.

I'll push for more information when I can, thanks :)

You're about 14 years old... you expect everyone to believe you have people that work for a show that would tell you correct information that could possibly lose them their jobs?

It's either all lies or you've just read it on another site.

WTF?

I didn't say it was used to refer to the actual housemates, I was referring to it being used to describe the test run housemates, the 'housemates' that enter a few weeks before launch so that the camera angles can be checked, task ideas can be tried etc.

And I said at least BB5.

Agreed. He's saying an earlier date because the pre-show stuffs started happening at the same time as usual nowadays. Most of his posts since the msn convo have just been to confirm other rumours, including that fake green eye which he claimed was real despite being made in PAINT.NET.

I'm sure you are right and it referred to 'test runs' and I still don't know I've heard that too often,
although,
once it was brought up and I gave it specific attention I do recall there were a few HMs who referenced themselves as 'Guinea Pigs' including that moron with the pony tail last season,
and,
yes it turned out they did mean as 'test HMs' or 'stand ins'.
but,
I sincerely do not recall hearing that used much anymore. I do recall hearing that years ago.
I recognized it had something to do with HMs (and not pets) but barely and in a 'foggy recall' sort of way.

I am sure you knew what you meant by it but I insist it is not as obvious as you think it should be,
even for fairly regular viewers of at least a few seasons.
The person who misunderstood doesn't qualify as 'hilariously foolish' for not getting the reference.
I suppose if we went through every article and post we could find 'guinea pigs' mentioned in context,
but,
overall (although i recall it) I haven't seen it used often enough.

dawa 09-05-2010 01:05 AM

You know... its not just limited to Big Brother. Test Subjects are usually known as Guinea Pigs..

Biological experimentation on guinea pigs has been carried out since the 17th century. The animals were frequently used as a model organism in the 19th and 20th centuries, resulting in the epithet "guinea pig" for a test subject

Yes, so have Hamsters which used to be a name given to HM's,
and,
Guinea Pigs have also appeared as pets in BB houses.
Or was it Hamsters?
Actually I think both have appeared as pets for the HMs in the house.

If you did associates 'guinea pigs' with people in the house you may also suppose the official HMs would be called 'Guinea Pigs' as BB is (or was) touted as a great social experiment.

If you asked me (even knowing) I'd say it makes more sense to call the 'test HMs' as something like 'Test Guinea Pigs',
and,
really the 'actual participants' are the ones being the season-long 'guinea pigs'.

Then again - unlike the first few seasons it no longer seems like an 'experiment' anymore.
Now the HMs go in so aware of the situation its no longer a 'test' of any sort.

Even if they didn't know of it's usage to do with the show, surely most people have heard the term in the news or documentaries refering to other tests.

And as I said they wouldn't send in animals unlooked after weeks prior to launch so even if they didn't know the term surely they realised that it couldn't mean pets for the hms?

Either way it's been explained to them before on here.

Exactly. Surely our school system's not that bad?

ElProximo 09-05-2010 08:44 AM

I'm sure Guinea Pigs (the actual animal) were pets in at least one BBUSA season. Does anyone remember this?

Also.. I can't remember but were the chickens already in the house before they arrived? I'm thinking they were.
But of course people are there before the launch night. So if they did have some pets this time its not like they starve until contestant 1 shows up.

Having said all that - I'm not a big fan of the pets. I find it distracts people. I dunno.. i mean they are cute for a while but just not big on it.

Maybe, but but not 5-6 bloody weeks before the final pieces of furnature don't go in till launch week. Even if they were they're a different creature with different needs a different way of feeding.

Not often enough or long enough to efficiently look after them. Guinea pigs aren't chuck em some food now and then type of animals like chickens. More dependant. Plus I'm sure it would be against some sort of rule to leave domestic animals in a studio 24-7, especially one that is basically a building site.

I don't even know why we're discussing this it was a stupid assumption, full stop.

dizzy bint 09-05-2010 09:45 AM

A pet of some sort (in BBUK's case chickens) was initially a fundamental rule laid down by Endemol for putting on the show. I think the idea was that it gave the housemates another life to think about so they didn't become so self absorbed. The rule must have been withdrawn when it obviously failed.

Yeah I remember it was chickens in any BB I remember back then. I could see the idea of it. It forced them to work together and a sort of 'responsibility' factor.
I know BBUSA had chickens and then a dog, I think Hamsters, guinea pigs.. oh and some kind of reptiles I recall. And fish.

You keep carrying on about it. It was shown you made the stupid assumption. full stop.
Well.. no you keep bringing it up.

Do not patronise me, it doesn't make you seem any bigger or harder than you're actually not, so get off you (relatively small) marble pony, and hurry back to mummy, tea's ready.

Secondly, the person who has provided me with this information proved himself correct to me when he correctly told me every detail about the BB10 house.

And, for the record, I'm sixteen, not that I have to justify myself to the likes of you.

That would guarantee ratings! I'd quite happily see 90% of ex-HMs buried alive!

There is a type of person on forum boards who becomes suddenly and insanely jealous if they suppose someone else has legitimate 'inside' information.

I was terrorized for years in BBUS forums when I (rarely) dropped some inside knowledge. It never ceased to amaze me who would FIGHT ME TO THE DEATH to discredit or 'one-up me',
and,
for years this went on until 2 different webmaster discovered (years later) that I really DID have close (close enough) ties to the show and really did have 'inside info' on occasion.
Even then some won't give up attacking you.

The thing is - I NEVER boasted it, bragged it up, flaunted anything or acted big about it,
and,
I would always qualify the tidbit.
I'd say "This one was just being discussed and NOT for sure but.."
Or "A good source told me this is pretty much set to happen... "

Anyways.. don't let it get you down and if you are being sincere then you WILL eventually be validated.
Then those who hassled you will look and feel stupid on their own and laughs will ensue.

I DO have a little 'inside' thing on THREE potential HMs. I've known about it for a long time now.
I just have to make sure I put up that 'disclaimer' as usual.

Alright - good job young man. Keep up the great posts and thanks
