Oh absolutely, but whether or not they should be there in the first place is moot, because they're there now. There's no sense in a rapid withdrawal. It would leave the country in a bigger mess than it was in when we went there.

It's time to come home.

It is in the interests of future stability in the Middle East to make sure that the radicals and terrorists do not gain control of Afghanistan since this would be extremely dangerous for the West. We created the mess, so we have to clean it up before we leave, that's the problem and the reason for a five year time line.

We didn't exactly create the mess, - it was in a mess long before we arrived!

Much as I sympathise with the ordinary Afghans - I don't want our soldiers dying for them - we cannot police the world! Five years is way too long - a lot of young soldiers are going to die in that time leaving a lot of devastated families and children! Soldiers can't pick where they are sent but I am sure most of them didn't sign up for that!

The Middle East will never be stable - religious differences and hostilities will forever be a problem there - the very ethos of middle eastern countries is lack of tolerance and belligerence - our presence just causes them to direct their hostilities towards our soldiers instead!

What a humanitarian you are.

WOMBAI 10-07-2010 07:25 PM

He is a humanitarian - he cares about our soldiers! They are human beings too - people's sons, brothers, fathers, husbands etc. Most Brits want them home now!

This basically, it's a nice thought to withdraw the soldiers instantly it's not going to happen and the people saying that they should are living in a pipe dream and haven't thought about the long term effects of doing so.

Sadly we've got to clean it up.

Yes, but they should know what they are putting themselves forward for when they enlist in the army. I really struggle to understand why people ignore this fact - you can criticise the war itself and the reasons behind it all you want, but it's not like tens of thousands of men were conscripted - they joined voluntarily.

Yes, but they didn't join up to fight other people's religious wars. People join up for many reasons, but I don't suppose many, if any, said they joined up to go risk their necks in Afghanistan or Iraq. And if people didn't join up, national service would be introduced and all young men would be required to do their bit and put their necks on the line! It isn't our war and it isn't our responsibility to police the world and risk our soldiers all the time.
