joeysteele 23-07-2010 08:16 AM

Rachel si a very odd girl.

Gillian-73 23-07-2010 08:22 AM

People are far to eager to throw the word 'racist' around nowadays! It was nothing of the sort!!!

For anyone who didn't get the bleeped word, Rachael was talking about the so-called banana boat, the term used for the way black people originally got to the UK. Used to be derogatory, now dropped into obscurity. Hence the mystified comments :-)

fruit_cake 23-07-2010 08:25 AM

did she use it as a way of intimidating Rachel??? if she did then it becomes racist otherwise it doesn't mean anything IMO

crit 23-07-2010 08:30 AM

Know your history....'straight off the banana boat' is a reference to people coming to the UK from the Caribbean. It was used mostly by other Caribbean people to describe the newly arrived as they had little idea how to dress for the British weather or in the fashion of the time.

It was the cheapest way to get to the UK to come with the cargoes of bananas ...on the banana boats.

Shasown 23-07-2010 08:34 AM

OP. So what you are saying is Rachel was racist towards herself and her ancestory? And she should be offended by her own comments?

janaddy86 23-07-2010 08:39 AM

I used to here the the term banana boat all the time when I was a bit younger. Still do form time to time. It was always used in reference to a persons stupidity or intelligence.

Bluerang1 23-07-2010 08:54 AM

I get it. But since she's half where I'm from, I don;t take offense ;) If it was a full Caucasian person that said that... xD I didn't take offense to Emily's comment either, it was a joke. Stupid Big Brother.

:o Anyone else pick up on that..

Derogataory comment towards black people I'm not black myself but if i was i would have definatley taken offence to that!

sigh

What is derogatory about that statement?

and black people (or non white people to be accurate as she is kind of beige) cant be racist about themselves since many call each other the n word - so they cant have it both ways

Niamh. 23-07-2010 09:37 AM

hahaha, ew why though?

muchadoaboutnothing 23-07-2010 12:06 PM

I'm Irish and in the 1950's and 60's people coming from Ireland to UK via Hollyhead or Liverpool used to say they had come on the 'cattle boat.' So Rachel would have been describing what many elderly Black would have described without it being a race issue.

cheapbbfan 24-07-2010 01:35 PM

racial slur? You've got to be kidding me

InOne 24-07-2010 01:37 PM

I represent the Black Community on TiBB and we have deemed the comment: Not Racist

Simone. 24-07-2010 01:44 PM

She might not have meant in that way, I'm mixed race no where near as dark as her (jealous) & I don't think she'd have meant it in an offensive way.

Mr XcX 24-07-2010 01:47 PM

Not Racist. Emily was not racist but still BB got rid of her.

Mr XcX 24-07-2010 01:47 PM

Plus it will ruin the FAKEmance.

hotleggs 24-07-2010 01:55 PM

I co-sign the fact that he speaks for us all in this case.

All that can be said on this thread is LOL.
