Also find the Ken Livingstone appearance on "Ernold Same" amusing. 79. "Dog Man Star", Suede http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6s1DT0046i...tar-276108.jpg Melodramatic, inspired by Bowie, traces of Britpop, references to James Dean and Marilyn Monroe, a vocal performance as gorgeous as "The Wild Ones"; it's aspiration in a record (and indeed a title). 78. "The La's", The La's http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov...65729o6mny.jpg Their only studio album, the Liverpool band are the go-to inspiration for the likes of Oasis, The Libertines and virtually anyone who's tried to copy them. There's obviously "There She Goes" which doesn't need explaining - but "Timeless Melody", "Doledrum" and "Feelin'" put across very strong impressions that they were a band that could (ably) span multiple eras. 77. "In Utero", Nirvana http://covers.mp3panda.com/11/110205...039339_big.jpg Oooh Shaun, you're so subversive, picking this one and not Nevermind. WELL NEVERMIND DOESN'T HAVE A SONG CALLED "RAPE ME", SO IT WAS NEVER GOING TO WIN. 76. "Dusty In Memphis", Dusty Springfield http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_jJAG_tiB6j...bums_Dusty.jpg It's hardly surprising that the URL for the picture of this is taken from a list of 'Gay albums'. You can argue that she's not an artist, since none of the tracks were written by her, but if you give a woman as uniquely talented as her songs crafted by the likes of Carole King, Randy Newman and Burt Bacharach you're bound for success. Favourites are "Son of A Preacher Man", "The Windmills of Your Mind" and "In the Land of Make Believe". 75. "Is This It?", The Strokes http://www.rankopedia.com/CandidatePix/20356.gif Often cited as one of the best, and most important, records of the 2000s, this personally isn't my favourite album of the band - but it's undeniably brilliant. I'm undecided as to which tracks are favourites because they're simultaneously so diverse and so similar, but I'll provisionally say "Hard to Explain" (the first track of theirs I heard... embarrassingly because of a mashup with 'Genie in a Bottle'), "Soma" and "Take It Or Leave It". I'd also be lying if I didn't mention "Someday" because that song will forever prompt endless gleeful smiles on my face. 74. "Blue Lines", Massive Attack http://www.tonspion.de/system/files/..._7D/376138.jpg Those who were here in 2007/8 will remember when I was firmly lodged up the trip-hop outfit's collective arse - and I am indeed still a fan (they've just been (rightly) overtaken by a great number of artists). The obvious source of meditative joy is "Unfinished Sympathy", but I've also a massive soft spot for "Safe From Harm" and "Five Man Army". 73. "Me and Bobby McGee" is a force to be reckoned with. 72. "Beggars Banquet", The Rolling Stones http://www.mclub.com.ua/images/alb/cover499_150520.jpg Obviously having "Street Fighting Man" and "Sympathy for the Devil" is reason enough - but I'll lie and say I think "No Expectations" and "Salt of the Earth" are really amazing and the only two reasons I picked it. 71. "Abbey Road", The Beatles http://heavyriff.com/wp-admin/images/AbbeyRoad.jpg OMFG SHAUN WHY IS THIS SO LOW, Karl screams, as he tears off his bollocks and hurls them at me. WELL KARL, I retaliate, because some of the tracks, like "Mean Mr. Mustard" and "Polythene Pam", are just bloody absurd. So yeah. In its defence, however, it made the list, and has beautuabtuautbautuabutuueueutuful tracks like "Something", "Here Comes the Sun" (ohay George Harrison my favourite) and I really love "I Want You (She's So Heavy)". Even Ringo managed a good'un! (Octopus' Garden). |

Also very fond of "Have You Ever Loved A Woman" and "Bell Bottom Blues" - they're probably my second favourite band to turn to if I want sexy guitars. 69. Thankfully songs like "Gates of Eden", "Subterannean Homesick Blues" and "On the Road Again" aren't ugly. Oh and I love the false-start on "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream" where he suddenly bursts into laughter. 68. "Sound Affects", The Jam http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...nd_Effects.jpg Most might pick All Mod Cons, but with "That's Entertainment!" (my personal favourite of the band) and some grittier tracks than their usual city-warfare ("Set the House Ablaze", "Boy About Town") I think this is easily my favourite album of theirs. 67. "Live at the Apollo", James Brown http://img-cdn.officialmp3s.mobi/art...the-apollo.jpg I generally don't collect live albums because I find the sound of audiences that I'm not a part of a little too envy-inducing. They don't come much shriller than the screams at the start of "Lost Someone" but for me it kind of reinforces what made him so great - the ability to reduce a stage to rubble just with dancing and vocals. 66. "Cheap Thrills", Big Brother and the Holding Company http://img.mp3mixx.com/images/covers...523046_big.jpg Well it has Janis, it has "Piece of my Heart", it has a ludicrously great cover of "Summertime" and is generally a lovely blend of psychedelia, excellent vocals and mellow rhythms. 65. "Urban Hymns", The Verve http://www.mp3crank.com/cover-album/...rban-Hymns.jpg Just for 'The Drugs Don't Work' really. Also love 'Lucky Man' a lot. 64. "Please Please Me", The Beatles http://assets.rollingstone.com/asset...528765mjru.jpg I think this is their most overlooked record. For a debut at the start of the 60s it's so corroborative with what we now come to expect from a modern record: cohesive sounds, great songwriting and something fresh. "Anna (Go to Him)", "Misery" and "Baby It's You" are my favourite tracks - but I've literally put every track on 5 stars. 63. "Music for the Masses", Depeche Mode http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rRA0caxvFe...s-1987_178.jpg I still don't know much about the band at all, and only own two albums, but this one's excellent from start to finish. There's something hypnotic about the opener ("Never Let Me Down Again") that lures you in with the primary rhythm and then bashes you on the head with about 50 different instruments in a kaleidoscopic fashion. Favourite tracks are "Pimpf", "To Have and to Hold" and "Strangelove". 62. "Strangeways, Here We Come", The Smiths http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...re_we_come.jpg Their last (4th) album and by most not really held up in the same light as Meat is Murder or The Queen is Dead - but I found this one more terrifying than both. Whether that's with the screaming riots at the start of "Last Night I Dreamt that Somebody Loved Me" or the oddly jaunty "Girlfriend in a Coma". 61. "Two Suns", Bat For Lashes http://recklessandfamous.files.wordp...s_two_suns.jpg In short, the best Bush since Bush. Björk is in an entirely different league, Tori Amos was just fucking dull, Florence + the Machine too poppy. This album earnestly hones in on the kind of theatricality and mysticism that made Kate a phenomenon - but it's also entirely unique. Her voice is less shrill, more silky, especially on 'Travelling Woman' - and my favourite song of hers (and one of my favourites of the past 10 years) - 'Moon and Moon'. |

Have to say it was a pleasant surprise it wasn't Violator. NLMDA is beyond epic live. Edit : And yes, Girlfriend In A Coma is so oddly uplifting, right? |
