You are right Niamh, a fracture covers any sort of cracks in the bone that isn't a full break, clearly if a bone os broken it is split in 2.

A sprain is more muscular in that you have badly pulled some part which causes painful swelling, all are painful depending on the person but clearly a bone split in 2 should likely be more painful however a fracture often delivers more pain.

Zippy 13-06-2011 09:33 PM

what's a bone in a crack called then?

*sniggers*

"Fracture" is another word for "break". Sprain is just a slight pull. :)

Was wondering when someone with a little common sense was going to spread the good word.

Sprains and strains are muscle, joint tendon and ligament injuries(soft tissue generally)

Fracture is the proper term for a break, damage to a bone from a hairline crack right through to compressing and shattering, there are several types or classifications of fractures, closed, open complicated hairline and greenstick being used to decsribe the actual fracture/break.
