-might as well post what i posted on tumblr-

I’ve only read 5 chapters so far and I’m aware that none of the action has happened yet, but…

the writing’s a bit simplistic. Is this aimed at young teenagers or something? Because without wanting to sound like a literary snob (and God knows, as an eng.lit. student I’m entitled to be) there’s a very fine line between short, sharp sentences and a glaring lack of vocabulary. I understand that a lot of the time this is just a narrative device to make the main girl all angsty and uncommunicative, but for a long time I was left with little impression of what District 12 was like.

eh, maybe I’m judging too soon. Maybe my inner Battle Royale fan isn’t even giving it a chance.

Lee. 28-01-2012 09:30 AM

Shaun, I agree with you. I bought the books thinking they were adult fiction, bit on reading them, I reckon they are aimed at teenagers/young adults. My mum and I were just discussing this yesterday funnily enough.

However, its easy reading and a good story... I just hope they don't aim the film at kids and hope they give it at least a 15 rating.

Niall 28-01-2012 12:40 PM

The writing style is a bit awkward to get used to, it's very....I'm not sure how to explain it. It's very straight foward and the tense it's in takes a bit of getting used to.

MeMyselfAndI 28-01-2012 01:18 PM

I might get the book because of Taylor Swift

It's the sheer simplicity of it. That's what I thought anyway.

You should just get the book because it's awesome! It's a really good read. :)

Shaun 31-01-2012 02:59 AM

finished the first book :worship:

Spoiler:

I think the death of Foxface was too rushed. She wouldn't have been that stupid. No way. I'd also have liked the whole mutts-tributes thing explained - why Katniss thought she saw the dead's eyes and features.

But the thing that most annoyed me is how attached to Gale she is :bored: she didn't appear to have any idea of romance prior to going into the games and it just left her coming across as cold and calculating, which, whilst in those circumstances helped them survive, seems a bit of a major character flaw.

Spoiler:

The capitol engineered the "mutts" to mess with the tributes heads basically. She wasn't just seeing things.

What Jessica said for the Mutts. I don't think Fox face was being stupid, she'd been stealing their food all along, she knew katniss knew her plants so why would she doubt her?

Also, I don't think it's a character flaw in Katniss. She is quite cold and I don't think she really thought about romance in general until this thing with Peta happened which in turn made her think about Gale in that way

I understand they'll have to cut some things out but I hope they don't ruin it to make it child friendly either. Do you know what rating it's going to have?

Smithy 31-01-2012 03:22 PM

Fortunately for the younger fans, director Gary Ross has confirmed that it will be a PG-13, to accommodate the younger fans of the book. Gary explained, “It’s not going to be an R-rated movie because I want the 12 and 13 and 14-year-old-fans to be able to go see it.”

It should be

Spoiler:

It's a gruesome story, watering it down to make it suitable for 12 year olds or younger will ruin it
