A thread is far more easily quotable.
Also if you PM someone they just accuse you of 'baiting' and 'stalking' on the basis that they cannot ignore a PM. If someone wishes to leave a thread and not reply they can easily do so. A PM can not be left unopened unless you want an outstanding notification and not readily ignored.
A thread would work better as one can't be accused of spamming an inbox.

To be honest you can ignore a thread or report any nuisances just as much as you can with a thread. And you can delete them if you want to leave the conversation. To be completely honest, as much as your arguments with half the forum would be entertaining for everybody else to read it would only cause arguments and sides being taken and for tensions to build and spill over into other threads by people who aren't even involved in the original argument.

I think the only way to solve this is to take mod status away from everyone, and give me ultimate admin status.

It's just like the 'spam forum' for me, I don't know if it would get used because it's not against the rules..

Thats a bit of an exaggeration tbh Charlie, we delete posts when they have been reported and are breaking the rules and when our warnings in the thread are ignored we don't delete them at the first sign of an argument

People will want to reply to a thread because it's in a public space and they want to be seen getting the better of the situation. PM's are incredibly easy to read, ignore and delete. I've done it countless times in the past with people who were not worth my time.

I do believe it yes. As in the past I have been unfairly infracted because I was PMing someone clam and justified points. But a report was made so an infraction was given for 'spamming'.

Stu 28-01-2012 05:59 PM

My brain is also now saying to me that a 24/7 Fight Club would really take away from the daft dog-in-school excitement of fights breaking out in threads they shouldn't.

It's like giving away crack cocaine for free. So much of the romanticism would be stripped away, dig?

Yeah that's one of your arguments. I was poking holes in the "people can ignore threads but not PM's" one. I assume it was good hole poking because you've just totally sidestepped it.

Jack_ 28-01-2012 05:59 PM

I'm all for no moderators. Imagine that. Who needs authority anyway?

lostalex 28-01-2012 05:59 PM

if yur looking for a 24/7 fight club then I'm definitely yur man :)

Or maybe you can not read. The thread is not asking for a 'Fight Club'.

I'd be the laziest mod ever..more lazy than Nathan!

Kid it's not like we are talking about LOST spoilers. If a fight thread exists I'm going to have a read of it. The mere existence of it would take the magic away from spontaneous off topic arguments.

See you're not the only one who can make "I'm suggesting this because I can't control myself ahhhhhhh!" arguments.

maybe you should take your own advice and get out more, if the forum is upsetting you that much, maybe a few days helping out in a charity shop or doing something more useful with your time would be just the ticket? otherwise you could just let it all drift over you, and not worry about having the last word!

InOne 28-01-2012 06:03 PM

I made a "get it all out thread" a couple of years ago. It had Jess and Harry arguing for about 3 hours in it. It was quite amusing and worked well. Those kinds of threads just remind you why you dislike some FM's so much.

lostalex 28-01-2012 06:04 PM

wait, i'm confused, is this thread about me getting mod status? or are you just teasing me?

I do not see what advice I need to be taken. I am not upset over anything at all. All I am suggesting is a place where posts can be moved to so that an debate can be finished/resolved rather than being deleted half way through.

I am not suggesting a fight thread. I am suggesting a 'resolve your debate thread rather than it being deleted out of the blue' thread.

I am not suggesting arguments that are so outrageous that they would spill over. I just want a thread where debates with fully justified points can be carried on rather than just to be straight deleted as if we are under such control of you moderators that part of us just can get erased at your choosing.

It could be a rule that others are not to join with out both parties consent.

Please just relate this to my original post and what I proposed not the baboons shouting for a 'Fight Club'.

Marc 28-01-2012 06:16 PM

They would though Charlie. I don't think it's a risk we should take.

Also I don't want newbies coming on to loads of arguments.

Stu 28-01-2012 06:19 PM

So if these debates are so acceptable in a public space - their only crime driving other threads off topic - why does it require a specialist thread? Why not just give the debate it's own thread for it to carry on?

CharlieO 28-01-2012 06:19 PM

You could always trial it for a month in off season. There aren't that many new members so it shouldn't affect it massively. And we could get a finite answer if you trial it.

It isn't like this is the government. There is no harm in trying. You can always revert it with no affect.

Because the moderators would not allow it, as it apparently puts new members off. In affect that is what I am asking for though. One single thread or a thread for each debate I do not mind.

Niamh. 28-01-2012 06:25 PM

Charlie, just take it to PM, if the person doesn't want to reply to you via PM, they probably won't want to reply to you in an argument thread either. Seems to me like you just want an audience to watch you argue with and try to belittle people.

Stu 28-01-2012 06:26 PM

I'm just finding your paper thin logic a bit of a poor mask to be honest. You want a thread for what would otherwise be deleted stuff to be allowed carry on. Oh but there is nothing wrong with this stuff ... it was just in the wrong place at the wrong time? And this absoloutely wouldn't become a slagging thread? If there was nothing wrong with the material in the first place it would be allowed continue ... just in a thread of it's own. In one of the many subforums. It doesn't need a new one.

It just sounds like you want the chastity belt to be taken off so you can get knee deep in the clunge. Now your argument is being watered down to the point of multiple debate threads? We have multiple debate threads. All the time. What is new about what you are suggesting?

G'wan away with your gay debate thread. We want a thread where people can kick each others teeth down their throats.

I agree with this.
