And you could probably try and argue that in America - they wouldn't make such a big deal about it if it wasn't for the Hollywood film, but here it's just because it the ship was made here, and that's that?

Lots of other ships were built in England, and the failure of many battleships at the time in the world wars were big news but no one celebrates or remembers them. About 90% of the people who will be 'remembering' the Titanic, wouldn't be if it were not for the film.

Yes obviously and I am not saying it wasn't history but lots of people would not give a toss nowadays if it hadn't been for the film.

1- Titanic was built in Ireland (now Northern Ireland)

2- This ship was the biggest moving thing and fastest most state-of-the-art ship on Earth when it was completed. Millions of pounds was thrown at it and it was famous before it even left Belfast. Many of the worlds richest and most famous people at the time were on board. The ship sank on its maiden voyage loosing over 1500. Today, the same equivalent would be the Burj Khalifa (worlds tallest building) collapsing in Dubai. That is what makes it so famous. Decades were spent searching for the ship and in the 1980s they spent millions trying to raise the wreck- all of this without the help of the film. If anything, if the ship had not been so famous in the first place then it was unlikely that James Cameron would have been given the biggest movie budget in history (at the time) to make a film about it.

3- The balloons are one of many installations around Belfast in the build up to Titanic week. They have been installed in recognition of a brand new £100 million Titanic Experience centre opening in the Titanic Quarter area of the city. The ship has always been a proud part of Belfast's history and with or without the film, that balloon installation would have been standing in Victoria Square this week.

It is my opinion on the subject and I stand by it. I ask no one to follow suit but yes that is just how I personally feel.

But I will make a final point, very few of you would know/be bothered to find out about those facts if it wasn't the film that outlined them for most. Especially the younger generations.

Titanic sank on 15th April 1912 so Ireland are remembering her in the weeks run up to that date and obviously to attract tourists to Ireland ;)

Titanic the film is being re-released for the 100th anniversary aswell but over the easter period for obvious reasons.

James Cameron doesnt have to put balloons outside River Islands on high streets all over Ireland for attention lol.

Titanic was buillt in Ireland so Its part of irish heritage and thats why they are there.

Its because the Ttitanic was seen as a masterpiece, the biggest ship in the world and was said to be UNSINKABLE.

Obviously then when an unsinkable ship goes down on her maiden voyage killing over half the people on board its gonna be big news.

The Titanic will never be forgotten and the balloon ship is very clever imo.

I agree with you Charlie - I think people are reading your post and assuming you think that nobody would know what the Titanic is if it wasn't for the film. That's not the case. But the memory of the disaster of the Titanic has been given longevity thanks to the film. It would still be in the news now with the 100 year anniversary rolling around if there hadn't been a film - but it wouldn't have such an important place in popular culture nowadays if it hadn't been for that film. It's like anything else from history - we remember the memorable, and what we find memorable depends what is presented to us in the most accessible form, I think, and a Hollywood film is precisely one way to do that. Anyway, the balloon structure is cool! Thanks for sharing Patrick!
