They need to make cigarettes really expensive. That'll do it

Boothy 06-04-2012 10:31 AM

They've had this in place at my local Co-Op for a few weeks now, it's absolutely ridiculous. Big black doors infront of the cigarettes with 'Can't see what you're looking for? Ask a member of staff if you want tobacco.'

I can't imagine anyone being deterred by that.

Marc 06-04-2012 10:32 AM

People go to the shops FOR tobacco so it's not as if they see it and then remember they need some

arista, you know by and large I agree with you on most things, this is one I don't.
If any Govt had the courage to dare to make selling cigarettes illegal then their hypocrisy as to this would then be gone for the most part.

However, smoking, drinking etc are legal acts in the UK and the Govt should excuse the pun butt out and let people smoke if they want to and not to if they don't,
A legal product on sale in the UK should not be hidden from those who wish to purchase it, that is interference in private business on a scale even the last nanny Govt ,Labour, didn't reach.

Indeed the covering up of the displays, with the panelling most have put up now in fact only draws your attention more to what it is covering up.

This is in my view a stupid ruling by this Govt, one of a good few rulings already done and still growing.

If the Government were REALLY that concerned - they'd make smoking tobacco illegal.

All they are doing is paying lip service to it all.

They make far too many billions of £s on the tax and vat on cigarettes and tobacco to every want to put their 'money' where their mouths are..... and ban it.

They won't as it generates far too much revenue, so in the meantime: they play these silly pretences of implying that they want people to stop smoking or reduce the numbers: to use the pun ''it's nothing but a smokescreen'.

Haven't you seen the advert with Stephen Fry and Rupert Grint? :joker: Stay in the UK!

flights are available for less cost than a half decent meal / night out.

I deliberately go abroad within the Eurozone to buy my tobacco and cigarttes for 6months - flights are cheap as chips and the money I save on buying at Eurozone prices compared to UK prices: literally pays for a week vacation in nice hotels: and that includes my spendy money.

3 days at Xmas for £99 in a 4* HB, including flights..... who can't afford that!

Being fair,a lot of people do that arista having never had a cigarette in their mouth ever or been around smokers particularly.

It's not just smokers that may end up possibly suffering that and likely most smokers never do anyway.

Vicky - is mum aware of the new rules that came into force 1st October? Just tell her to be aware - it's a very badly worded ruling which basically is worded to put the frighteners on travellers - a few of my friends bottled it but as long as it can be justified as own use - no issue - but if she's unaware - might be worthwhile ensuring she's in the know - I love the wording

If our goverment played fair ball: they'd actually gain MORE tobacco sales in the long run.

Amber Leaf baccy - was being sold on a promo - 1kg with free 1/2 bottle of vodka ! :D Superb!

True - but many other non smoking related illnesses cause many people to die in horrid pain and far worse things that coughing up blood.

You pays your money: you takes your chance.

I'd far rather the smell of a smoker than someone with a leaking colostomy bag - maybe I'm fussy that way. :blush2:
