I don't think the internet should be policed, and why should we entrust our governments with that anyway, and not expect them to just use that power to their own benefit, just look at how desperate they've been to put a stop to wikileaks revealing things that the authorities didn't want the public to know, and things they won't ever get to know if the internet begins to get censored. Who guards the guards and all that
In any case I highly doubt it'd even be feasible |
lostalex I was going to say the same!!!
I like the way the internet is, I don't want the internet policed because it may hurt the feelings of the few. Protect yourselves and not others that don't want it |
Vile, some people out there are just nasty but the internet has it's downsides...

To be honest I have seen and heard far more uglier 'normal' people than this girl,I do hope people who find this sort of thing acceptable get their comuppance one day.
|
I took umbrage at this
"Eventually, it will have to be policed in some way because some people are twisted and not to be trusted. As a consequence of the actions of a few, everyone will have to suffer their liberties being infringed and lose the total freedom they now enjoy, for the greater good. Because some people are ar5eholes and cannot be trusted to act like a reasonable human. It's just the way it is." What greater good? How is having our liberties stripped from us make the greater good? |
Trying to police the internet is ridiculous. It's like a vegan going to an S&M club and then complaining because there's too much leather.

Like I said previously... we're on a moderated forum right now. And yet... here you are. |
I have to agree with Livia on this one. I mean it's like being in the real world, the police don't bother you if you're not doing anything dodgy

You only have to commit the crime of being a teenager, or looking a little rough to be stopped on a regular basis. |

When I was at school I got stopped all the time with my black friends when we were out at lunch (this was Sloane Square tho).
It depends how you look, if you don't conform you'll raise a lot of attention |
Livia it's my liberty to not be seen all the time, not to be regulated.
Your argument is like saying why don't we all have cameras in every house because if you're not up to anything then what do we have to hide? I go to sites that started that meme, I go to sites that have unsavoury jokes. I ask for anonymity and you ask why. China much? |

Do what you like, go where you like... but eventually it will be policed. And by policed I mean monitored in the way this place is monitored - because it is inevitable. My argument is nothing like saying there should be cameras in every house. My argument is like saying, don't have cameras in every house, but if someone is attempting to murder you in a house, someone will call the police and the police will come. It's a wonderful thing to imagine that the Internet will remain free and unregulated, and if everyone was normal, and honest and trustworthy, it would be possible. But not everyone is, and therefore there will be constraints. I would rather it not be so, but I can also see why it will happen. |

I'm well aware it's being more and more regulated but you make it sound like it's for the better.
And you pointed out what am I doing if I don't like the rules/spotlight. Re the mods I get on fine here but on other forums I've been banned for silly (supporting the wrong team etc) or no reason so I can't agree with you on that. No Government or state is my moral compass Who watches the watchmen? |

I used the example of the mods here because people are saying how awful it would be if the Internet was moderated and I wanted to point out that portions of it already is. And we're all here, enjoying it, and coming back and not feeling in the least bit opressed. Well, apart from lostalex, obviously. No government or state should ever be allowed to police the Internet. I don't have all the answers, but from a legal perspective, I can see that in the future, policing of the Internet has got to happen or it will turn to chaos. I think I've said all I have to say on this. It's been interesting to talk to you about it though, Hennessy, and I look forward to talking with you about other stuff. |
