obama did muhammad ali's rope-a- dope (ali played the sleeping elephant to george foreman, he hang on the ropes for 8 rounds they countered when george was exposed and tired) so romney did perform slightly better overall and won the first round, but is it a hollow victory?...I think the main reasons is as follows
1) hes been electioneering for the last 6 months, obama hasnt, so romney was more match sharp
2) romney is very good at his talking points and he went through them all.
3) Obama doesnt like confrontation. however Id suggest in his pracice for the next one, he needs his staff to grill him thoroughly and get him match fit
4) romney game out aggressive and guns blazing as thechallenger long way behind and with nothing to lose. obama was defensive, playing a safe game and didnt take risks.
5) romney got aggressive stared down obama and said I dont know what youre talking about (re jobs overseas) he also claimed obama put 90 billion in green energy (way inaccurate) and also accused him of letting his own backers invest in these failing green companies. these were blows to win romney to win the debate, but long term, it made romney look ruthless, aggressive, arrogant and a bit unpresidential.
6) obama is biding his time. he did the same with john mccain, he picked him off slowly but surely
7) I was disappointed obama didnt counter more of mitts points about how much tax americans are paying and why. the figure of 42% was bandied about.
8) healthcare, id give it to obama though. obamacare is almost a replica of romney care. romney tried desperately to paint the differences but it failed. romney wants to totally dismantle obamacare, not tweak it. romney doesnt say anywhere what he would replace it with? so there goes 40 million voters to obama. This shows romney says too many radical things to play to his right wing audience. it gets him a cheer in texas, but the cheer fades in other states.
9) beneath the headline grabbing nonsense about obama being stared down. obama was playing counter attack. he wanted to give romney enough rope to hand himself.for romney to make big bold claims such as his 12 million new jobs claim? 12 million really? is that new or net , mittt?
10) obama made great points about tax breaks and incentives for small to medium businesses. that doesnt get the major headlines, but I found that exciting as he reshapes the economy. he also correctly claimed the oil production is up too. to be honest I am not a socialist so I dont like to see too much government interference and government jobs. however regulation of these enormous industries must be tight and must be open and ethical.
11) romney mocked obamas 4/5 trillion debts. obama explained clearly where that came from. obama made it clear as he has already stated, where the next 4 trillion will be saved. 2 trillion less military spending than romney wants (romney again failed to explain why he wants an extra 2 trillion military spending?) obama rightly said hes gone after corporate corruption imposing massive fines and he has and he has in law that every cent leant to the banks will be repaid with interest , on time, or theyll face fines. this has also been the case. he should have mentioned the dow jones is the highest since 2003
12) romney scored with some headline grabbing claims and with his aggressive posturing. personally I think all that aggression and staring down the opponent is pathetic and is better off in the bar room than a debate. obama was merely making notes. that seems to matter to simple minded people who want to see aggression.
He strikes me as a dangerous man. yes a good speaker when hes on message , but prone to radical statements. hes frighteningly slick and appears quite ruthless. I dont think he has to worry about the 47% working class as he wouldnt relate to most of them imho....romney won this battle, but he will probably lose the war
