I don't see how it is an insult to Richard. Richard finds it hilarious to laugh at Michael's beliefs, but because he doesn't like being a flambouyant gay and constantly going on about being gay he doesn't like him. Michael is just too overly conscious of what people think of him. He wants to be a gay man with masculinity, but richard just keeps challenging and mocking him and it's driving him mad.
