So let's get this straight, the old lame horses that were once only fit for the knackers yard ie, dog food or glue are now a tea-time fave?
And the FSA turned a blind eye why?...

If I hear one more pensioner on a phone-in say "It's fine, we ate horse meat during the war..." I will throw myself on the floor and have a full-on diva-style breakdown.

it was a tongue in cheek remark, I actually think the whole thing is a disgrace, my brother is a farmer in Ireland and the hoops he has to jump to courtesy of Brussels simply to rear beef cows is ridiculous. There is a tremendous amount of red tape, every calf has an ear tag and a number and is traced from the day it is born, if a calf is born dead then an even more ridiculous amount of red tape has to be waded though, so I as a consumer would like to know where exactly the system is breaking down, and where Brussels who are telling us what shape vegetables we can eat back off and let the companies put whatever **** they like into our food. Its no problem to eat horse meat as long as you know you are eating it, what other hidden gems are we eating with no knowledge?

'FSAI believe the horsemeat was introduced in blocks of frozen burger filler product imported from Poland.'

That is old news it was in the link from this afternoon arista.

the meat is not halal either as it also contains pig..
'The initial scare prompted food distributor 3663 to carry out its own tests because it feared five of its halal products, which it provides to prisons intended for Muslim inmates, might have contained horsemeat. But the tests found pig DNA traces - the eating of pork is banned under Islamic law'

I'm sure 3663 supply school dinners too...
