Ok, well I actually am an emergency department doctor, as it happens ;) and no, I think it's very unlikely that she truly needs a cast the size of that (or the fancy poly sling either, come to that) - however, I wouldn't blame her for it, it's nothing to do with her. I would imagine that the ED doctors and nurses that treated her wanted to make sure they did a gold plated job given that she was on tv. Don't blame them, I'd probably have done the same myself. But from the little bit she said (and observation) I'll hazard a guess that she sustained a scaphoid fracture (small bone in the hand, under the thumb). In our hospital, you'd be lucky to get a plaster cast for that at all, let alone a sling. A Velcro splint and a fracture clinic follow up would be your lot. Even if it was a fractured radius (wrist) it still wouldn't need a plaster cast practically up to the elbow. An over-enthusiastic plaster nurse, I think.
