Kyle 01-11-2013 11:29 PM

I think my name (Kyle) is Scottish for a gap of land with water running in between joining two larger bodies of water.

My entire name is Scottish.

Some Irish names for me are really hard to pronounce, I know Caoimhe is pronounced Kee-Va but if I'm reading it like off a list I always say it different, like Kai- O - Me. I didn't know that Niamh was pronounced Neev until recently, until then I was saying Naomi :joker: idk why I do this though.

Chuck 01-11-2013 11:51 PM

Eoin is also an Irish name right? If I didn't know it I'd probably say it like:

e, like "and" in French, et - o, like "to" in French, au, in

Eoin is pronounced the same as Owen just Oh-in

I thought Eoin was pronounced E O IN, Why am I so bad at pronouncing these names? :joker:

King Gizzard 01-11-2013 11:57 PM

Thought it would be something like Oi In knowing you Irish

smudgie 01-11-2013 11:57 PM

Graceful as a lily.

King Gizzard 01-11-2013 11:58 PM

Because Irish is a different language, the pronunciation doesn't seem to make sense when you're using the English language as your base to work from. Like the reason Niamh is pronounced Neeve is because in the Irish alphabet there is no letter V so MH together or BH together make a V sound

I thought it was pronounced the same as 'Ian'. I've been saying (or thinking) it wrong all these years then. :S There was a Scottish footballer called Eoin Jess that was pronounced 'Ian' like that.
