TiBB was a much calmer place when we had the karma system, we only lost it because of the server change I believe? It wasn't removed because it was causing any problems. There was an hourly limit on it I think, you could only plus or minus one post per hour. The site's fine without it but I think it encouraged people to make better posts when the karma system was around. Would be glad to see it return.

For example someone posts a sarcy, condescending comment to another member, others that don't get on with said member likes the post just to bait then when it descends into an argument it's us left to deal with it. |

:bored: The mods/admins act like they are brains surgeons or something, they are always against anything that MIGHT give them an extra post or two to delete every day, we never get anything slightly fun or interesting because "it would make more work for the mods/admins", well whatever, we could all easily give you a lot more work if we wanted.

One of the main problems with this forum is the members hardly ever get listened to. The mods opinion is always correct and final. Chances are this thread will be getting locked soon despite it being a fair debate. |
..I think they have something similar on another forum I'm on...it's a 'reputation system'...I don't think that it's abused in that it's not for any negative/sarcastic etc posts anyway...mind you I think most people forget to use it anyway..well, I do...

Doesn't really make any sense why it's necessary. Can't people just appreciate good posts without the need for a thumbs up?
It will just become meaningless, and here's why: Stu or Jack or someone could write a really long, well thought out post in serious debates, whereas someone desperately trying to fit the word weave into their post will be in for far more reputation than the good post. It just adds to the dilution of quality. You'll probably end up with a situation where posters are asking for reputation from others offsite, like they have done for votes in the popularity games on TIBB. More importantly, it actually sets out a false hierarchy for any new members joining, which won't encourage participation or dissenting opinions. |

The fact is a lot of the suggestions from members do get added, the twitter add on, new skins, smileys are a few of the top of my head but there's always something else being requested and just because it works elsewhere and you think it's a great idea for the forum doesn't mean we all have to agree. And I know some think well we could just remove it again but most don't seem to realise it's not as easy as pressing a butting in the control panel, the thanks button is an addon for vbulletin that would need to be installed by James then tweaked to run on the forum along with all the other addons then if it was to be named something else other than 'thanks' like someone else suggested then it would be the code that would have to be edited. Atm I just don't see it being something we need on here. |

I can't at how serious some people are taking it, it'd just be fun feature to have on the forum not some sort of competition. People would really care enough to ask for likes offsite? Okay then

I dont care either way tbh if this happens. Though I can see it being abused Also its not quite as easy as to say 'if people abuse it then take it off' because if we did do that then it would be 'why is everyone losing out because of 3 members' etc etc. But I dont much care. Dont really see how it would be more work for us. Personally if I see someone constantly using it to 'thank' random gifs or insults, I will just stick a ban on that person and be done with it  But it might be a lot of work to be added in the first place..IDK |
'Thanks' would be weird and cringey, there should just be a thumbs up sign and a thumbs down sign on the side and people would click either one based on if they agree with the post, or if they find it funny etc. if you find a post funny saying 'thanks' wouldn't make sense if you get what I mean.. a thumbs up and thumbs down system works for everything
It wouldn't count towards anything like points so there'd be no reason for anyone to beg people for likes. And it wouldn't be anonymous so that would stop it being abused. |

It's not like the site would benefit from adding a karma system because it wouldn't improve anything and the site's fine as it is, it doesn't need a karma system added on, but it was a nice feature and despite all of the valid negative points people have brought up in this thread, the reality (or at least IMO) was that it was a light hearted feature that encouraged people to be better posters. If people wanna beg for + karma or people + each other all the time, so what? Even if someone had the highest karma on the forum for all the wrong reasons, it would be apparent to anyone reading their posts that perhaps it wasn't genuinely earned... Plus, as always, a handful of people would want to opt out of it because they're averse to praise/criticism for their own personal reasons and would rather not be involved in "forum popularity contests" and there really is no need for a karma system to be added so might as well leave it be... but I miss it and I think it would be nice to have it back again. |
Actually.I seem to remember mark promising to bring back karma if we got a certain amount of members..or something along those lines Or did I make that up? :suspect:

I think he said something in the fb group about it...
Been trying to find it since I posted that but it was ages ago and my internet is slow :joker: Bet it turns out have for some reason invented his in my head or something |
People also used to offer karma points as a prize for winning games which I thought was quite cool... like the host of the game would give the winner 10+ points and they'd do it one by one every two hours or whatever the limit was... I think custom forum awards kinda ended up replacing that in a way but it was the same idea, you get a forum reward for winning a game.

omg @ ammi using another forum, I feel like i've been cheated on :(
