my take on the situation is this, I think those hats get a lot of people trying them on and having a laugh with them, I think the owner was thinking you where just another customer having a laugh using his stock as a prop!.
as your son is 16 this adds to the fact.
the owner is running a serious business not a joke shop.
don't do anything.

Different perspective and very good point. Maybe the shop owner recognised you as non serous customers Kizzy?

I would image they where having a good chuckle:joker:

Are you suggesting because my son is 16 he was acting like some kind of div?
The hat was adult sized, and as I said he was seriously considering buying it. I've spent a lot of money in there over the years and didn't appreciate him being spoken down to like that.
But I'm so effing polite I ended up apologising to him!...
No, I'm going to have to say something it's peed me right off! :(

I would ask him where the policy notice is re trying on hats, if he does not have one then let rip.

Vanessa 21-01-2014 12:59 PM

I would just explain to him that your son wanted to buy one of the hats. How can he do that if they don't let him try it on?

Yes how else is he going to see how totally ridic he looks?
Ah well, he lost a tenner there I guess, mardy old git.

In that case I would ask him what the problem is as you could have bought it, taken it home, and then returned it and he wouldn't know how many heads it had graced.

This. Rude bitch [the shop assistant, not Josy lol]

Is it a large chain or an independent shop?

If it's a large chain, name and shame them on here. If it's an independent shop, I get that you won't want to tell everyone on TiBB where you shop. lol

I think you ought to write a letter to the manager, or head office and complain about how you were treated. It's unacceptable. People try things on in shops. I don't see the staff in New Look policing the changing rooms so that anyone who looks unwashed can't try on a pair of jeans, so they can't use the hygiene excuse. It's a hat, not underwear.

Where I work there are a ton of novelty hairbands for kids and people come in and try them on their kids all the time. They don't always buy them. It's just the same in my opinion. I wouldn't dream of telling them not to.

I don't think sheriff meant that your son must have been acting like an idiot, just that the shopkeeper might be used to teenagers coming in and joking around with hats and profiled him incorrectly as a potential troublemaker or someone who was taking the piss. If you were joking around in the shop before he came over and you then apologised when he came over to you, then that's only going to make the shopkeeper think he was correct in his assessment.

Of course you must try a hat on! Some look ridiculous.
