but the 'spelling' thing, you need to understand that quite simply; people cannot spell.

Kind of defeats the objective of a forum.
And how are people to know when a post is coming up with wrong grammar? We don't know until we've read it, and then, well... it's too late.

I'm (not) sorry that people think I'm attacking their disorder/learning difficulty. Because I'm really not - I'm simply pointing out what annoys me, and the things I have outlined do annoy me.

well if it annoys someone so much - and someone keeps doing it - just but them on the Ignore list

because its going to be the same people

Its not like if someone doensn't use correct grammer in a post is there is a gonna be a sign above it saying 'DO NOT READ - INCORRECT GRAMMER'. So how would we know not to read it:puzzled:

Lauren 23-11-2006 09:56 PM

Simon, you're taking my words too literally.
It's you that said I shouldn't read what people have to say, not me.
It annoys me, yes. But as Legend has already pointed out, I can still understand what people are saying. Just because it annoys me doesn't mean I don't want to listen to what people have to say.

SiMoN! 23-11-2006 09:57 PM

but if it annoys you why would you want to read the post

Because I don't know if it is going to annoy me before I have read the post, do I?

And if I ignored everything in life that annoyed me - I would barely be living at all.

OK then

Lauren 23-11-2006 10:02 PM

It could well be the same people, but their point is still valid to me - even if the grammar errors annoy me.
As I said, I can't just "ignore" everything that annoys me in life - that would get me no-where.

stoney12 23-11-2006 10:06 PM

Lets worry more about what people are saying , other than the precise spelling of it.You'll end up with a perfectly grammatical forum with about 3 members on it otherwise.

I like a lot of the messages that are written on the spur of the moment, especially during BB when people are writing in direct reaction to something that has just happened.By the time they stop to spell/grammar check it all the moment would have passed.

Lauren 23-11-2006 10:10 PM

I didn't say that it should be in the rules that everything should be perfect grammatically.
I just said that, personally, it annoys me.

Red Moon 23-11-2006 10:13 PM

Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at an Elingsh uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht frist and lsat ltteer is at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae we do not raed ervey lteter by it slef but the wrod as a wlohe. ceehiro.

So there you go it's doesn't matter about spelling.

Lauren 23-11-2006 10:16 PM

It doesn't affect whether you can understand it or not. I've already said, yes, I can understand what people are saying when they spell things incorrectly or use wrong grammar.
Yet it still annoys me.

Or should that be perfectly Grammatical ? Or Grammatically Perfect ? See we could be here all day , but I know what you mean...Perfectly.

Well, I wasn't arguing the case for 100% prescriptivism. I meant the obvious errors, such as they're, their and there, etc.

Dan_ 23-11-2006 10:23 PM

I'm not overly bothered about spelling, just so long as someone's made the effort to not type in text speech and the post mainly make's sense I can deal with it.

I know what your saying Lauren ,but I would be a bit more fed up if someone had something great to say but either lost their momentum or even did'nt bother contributing for fear of not knowing their grammar too well.

Yeah I agree Dan, Some people aren't that good at spelling, But they make an effort. To be honest it spelling mistakes don't bother me at all, Because most of the time I know what they mean.

Its text speech that annoys me, That's just pure lazy! And I don't understand a lot of it. :bored:

Lauren 23-11-2006 10:30 PM

I would hate to think that people stopped posting because they were afraid of it being grammatically incorrect. Thats not the point I'm trying to get across at all.

Problem is some people might feel that way. Some people will have had enough of teachers correcting their grammar to last them a lifetime and they don't come on here for grammar lessons. It will put them off posting.

I understand that.
But it really doesn't stop me being annoyed at incorrect grammar, I can't change having that feeling, can I?
