I live somewhere similar myself Josy and generations of my family were 'down the pit'.

It's hard to reconcile how these old 'pit' villages used to look with how they are now.

We never got provident but he used to come round when my dad was out, I think he was my uncle... but mum said dad didn't like him so not to say he'd been ;) (jk)

Same here, think there used to be a fresh fish van and on Friday evenings a fish and chip van would come round but I am too young to remember such things
