I think it was a mix of this, and being TOO good from the very start. He was the obvious fave from his first audition really, he had no room to improve or anything given how fantastic his voice was. People were waiting for him to fail IMO

Absolutely, he peaked really before the finals started in all likelihood and while he never got worse in any way, there was nothing different coming from his songs and performances.
A great pity.
